I have to admit, I didn't know there were such divided opinions on Candlemass' vocalists I opened a can of worms unwittingly heheh! What should we discuss next, do you prefer Paul Di'anno or Bruce Dickenson? Also, nice ink talvisynth !! crystallogic13 <3 omg yesss, Where at Night the Wood Grouse Play is such a beautiful work of art <3 Listening currently to Hellripper: A friend recommended to me, one man band from Scotland! Pretty impressive

OMG !!! Can you even imagine that at that discussion the next example was indeed Di Anno and Dickinson ? And my opinion is that I can't stand for example listening to my beloved Di Anno era songs by Bruce and of course I can not even want to imagine Di Anno singing Dickinson songs.. And while there's no objectively question on who is more "beloved" for most (and me), Dickinson that is, I really want to listen Phantom of the Opera, Prowler, Remember Tomorrow and all the early hymns from Di Anno, there's no discussion the songs here perfectly fir the original singer/"interpreter" ("ερμηνευτής" we call them in Greece who sang a song, I *guess* like in classical music, which orchestra and who coordinated it/was maestro (?not very clasical music literate excuse for my mistakes)).. But as a last note let me tell you that Dickinson can easily sing imho Bayley's era songs and Bayley did a real honest try when he was in Dickinson's shoes BUT , Bayley with ALL due respect was always feeling from back then even in the style and image kinda like a Dickinson out/ Dickinson style singer in... Though sometimes I swear I'd love if today's Youtube Dickinson especiallist mimic perfect 100%, even overcloning him like hyperbolicly were around back in the 90s, what could have happened haha Np (and since last night actually) some Running Wild and specifically back forth repeats of Blazon Stone, still have it in my first bought LP from way back then What can I say about Running Wild that hasn't been said, but they provide us fans a very rewarding battle of discussing which album is their best (and like Maiden and other legends you never settle on one ) ... Personally I always settle as my favorite either on Pile of Skulls, Port Royal and Blazon Stone, but I also put right there beside also Death or Glory (of course) and Under Jolly Roger Legendary times for metal in general and shaping our genre in the 80s,90s, lucky to grow up at that time and also lucky that so many other great genres have shaped in our time (like Dungeon Synth )...

Many thanks & cheers! As for Katatonia, one band that furthermore came to mind is the Finnish group Rapture, whose material - especially their '99 debut Futile - is very much inspired by Brave Murder Day, highly recommended as well: Back in the day this used to be my summer night album for many years.

There's one band that I often tend to forget I was a big fan of back in the day: Bal-Sagoth. Some years ago I sold or otherwise dealt forward quite a bit of my old CDs that I hadn't listened to for ages *), and the full discography of this group went there too. Just some weeks ago I found myself in a state of actually regretting it a bit, so searched for the ones I personally considered their best releases, namely Battle Magic and Power Cosmic**). The former I found as an original press at Discogs and the latter I got as a re-issue from a Finnish music store, so having those covered now. Ofc, not my cup of tea the way these used to be, yet entertaining nonetheless. *) Still having some 200-300 items in the shelves, but decided to save just the most important ones; I used to have some triple of that for a long time and a lot more before that; I once counted around 4k albums have visited my possessions during my life. And I pale in comparison to a couple of guys I distantly know here in Finland who have over 20k metal albums of pretty much every possible type and format stuffing their apartments. **) I know many people praise the '96 album Starfire Burning upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule as the best Bal-Sagoth release and it was also the first one I heard from them, yet Battle Magic was always my personal fav many times over the rest. Furthermore, Bal-Sagoth brings in mind particularly strong memories from late 90's and the turning/beginning of '00, I used to watch the good ol' Conan the Barbarian several times per year, I devoured every book of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series that I could get my hands on, and then in summer '00 came Diablo 2, so a wide scale of fantasy n stuff filling my life back then. Was also working on the 1st demo of Talvi and I composed a lot of melodies especially between '98-'01. Good times those were.

A bit of spamming for my part, thus apologies! So anyway, yesterday I came across Shadowkiller by accidentally clicking something just next to what I was supposed to click at first, but turned out it was a good accidental click. Hadn't heard of this group before. Actually not bad at all!

talvisynth Many great topics mate Enjoying your posts!! As for Rapture you proposed, never heard of em but listened to the release you proposed on youtube and I liked it and gonna get it, nice stuff and thanx for the recommendation!! Now, Bal-Sagoth, the Barbarian Metal Kings, I BOW TO THEIR MAJESTY And you nailed the experience AND the great era they were released I've always been a huge Bal-Sagoth fanboy from the Starfire Burning era, back then while we had a lot of Epic Metal and related themes to listen to while RPGing, reading fantasy literature or Conan comics and related activities I don't remember any epic/fantasy themed stuff in the Black Metal scene besides Summoning (another beloved act), and they really took (both of them) upon them to define the genre forever with real MASTERPIECES in this favorite for many of us metal genre.. What can I say about Bal-Sagoth mate, how many summers in the 1996 to 2010 they were the absolute listening experience in my village reading books and enjoying life, really love Bal-Sagoth As die-hard fans I think we all have our favorites order and for me that would be after hard decisions : Atlantis Ascendant (i love previous albums so much so you can guess how much i love this that despite worshiping previous albums if I had to take only one album with me it would be this one.. It's a great album full with hymns, the majesty you get with Draconis Albionensis feeling like a dragon over some spires, the addictive mystery and space connections of Star Maps of The Ancient Cosmographers (... at the point "I have discovered a universal axiom which can not be... DENIED.. I get CHILLS on me thinking I can solve some mystery math problems like Collatz Conjecture, huge chills) or the ancient Egyptian desert atmospheres of "The Dreamer in the Catacombs of Ur " or the great explorer and H.P. Lovecrafts "At the Mountain of Madness" connections at "In Search of the Lost Cities of Antartcica" ... The list goes on, top to bottom it's a 100% for me and a forever favorite reminding me also great times and INDEED for me Diablo 2 was released around the time so "Atlantis Ascendants" was my soundrack (on CD ) back then and i only have great memories of those really great times.. Funny thing I wanted to put them on order and ended up writing a mini review of Atlantis Ascendant, this shows I hope how much I love their music and how much I propose anyone here to listen to them since the demographic here certainly would appreciate their style... So as hard as it is, Atlantis Ascendants=>Tie of Battle Magic and The Power Cosmic (I listened to Battle Magic at summers as I said and when passing University exams as a strength filler and victory song I listened to "A Tale from the Deep Woods"(what an ANTHEM but the whole album again here is a 100%, i put all three of my top picks equal - The Power Cosmic on the other hand reminds me of 1999 and playing in winter in my then already very outdated 386 "Dragon Wars" (brother game kinda of original Wasteland) , and also is 100% Which leaves Starfire Burning in like 4th place but I also give it a pure 100% it's just more dark and wintry , a real masterpiece.. Now " The Chtonic Chronicles" was very attention-detailed and strong release but the previous are such masterpieces that you can compare it but is a must for any fan, actually through the years it has grown in me and also has of course some great DS/fantasy instrumentals that are perfect but it really good, just has the giant previous albums to be compared which feels unfair.. As for their first release, I honestly never got into it BUT the remaster I have given some tries kinda feels much better so certainly there's something there!! All in all Bal-Sagoth (as well as Summoning) I believe they are the kings heavyweights in the Epic Black metal (Summoning for slow Epic Black, Bal-Sagoth for faster symphonic Epic Black) and if anyone here hasn't given em the chance to please do it, as I already mentioned the demographic here fits perfectly the music and themes.. And they also have both thankfully their own handful of worship bands that feed our addiction till they decide to release anything new!! Endless respect for both of these Gods imho.. Never listened to Shadowkiller, unknown to me so gonna check it out mate!! Yesterday I listened after a long time many many repeats of on my favorites of Omen, the classic "Battle Cry" which is a monument in the classic/heavy/epic/power/you name it metal genre, usually i select my favorites but listened for many hours on repeat top to bottom and enjoyed and remembered why people love it

crystallogic13 : Great to meet a fellow Bal-Sagoth fan! Hails & cheers indeed! I must also add that personally I find the cover art of Power Cosmic very intriguing in how it combines fantasy and sci-fi into a gonzo mix of taking the swords & sorcery of ancient times to the starscapes and alien worlds of the far future! Actually now I took a re-spin of Starfire... in YouTube and I must say the intro still gave me goosebumps from tip to toe, whoah!

Still doing a lot of (re)searching in the heavy and power I've missed of previous decades, it's amazing how much good stuff might be missed!! Np Onward-Evermoving
This is very nicely executed late 90s power but with all the good things of it and appropriate 80s love, personally I believe it's much more enjoyful than other after 98 power metal offerings that were not very indistinguishable among each other ... Nicely done here , I've had from yesterday and to today endless top to bottom listenings, good time spent , what I wanted from this one~~! p.s. I don't remember if anyone here proposed it before so how I came across it, if so, thumbs up!

Hello there, don't mind me tiptoeing back onto the forums XD been a minute since I logged in lol! crystallogic13 , 100% agree on your opinion on each singer suiting their own material better! I find myself listening most often to the first two Maiden albums over the vast majority of their work, however you can't deny that Bruce is an amazing vocalist and was a perfect fit for the band in progressing their sound in way Paul wouldn't have been able to provide. talvisynth , thanks for sharing man I never heard of Bal-Sagoth before! I've just recently started branching into 90s metal, and there is certainly a lot I've been missing out on! Really enjoying the symphonic epicness going on here Onward also sounds dope, adding both them and Shadowkiller onto my list Currently been enjoying some favorites myself the past week, been playing these two albums on repeat:

Keep coming back to Century the past few days. Newer band that does a great job in capturing that early NWOBHM sound. Their first demon from 2020 is also spectacular!

Keep coming back to Century the past few days. Newer band that does a great job in capturing that early NWOBHM sound. Their first demon from 2020 is also spectacular! What a great blast my head got!!! This release/group went under my radar, thanx for mentioning it, what excellence!!! Not just nwobhm, the vocals which is a hard part are SPOT on beyond great and perfectly fit to the music, I'm in awe!! The sound really sounds as oldschool as it should, I can't have enough of this release, love from the 1st listen!! Excellent stuff and not very usual to be into a release from the first listen , first notes... Many thanx for the heads up angbandslasthero !! Now Playing ^^^ What angbandslasthero posted GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD stuff Earlier today listen : Some good old Skyclad from the golden years
(love old Skyclad , listening to them today as a tribute to a legendary greek metal Hammer 90s (Tasos Stamatoukos) writer that greek scene was shocked yesterday to find out he commited suicide by falling on train tracks last week... )

crystallogic13 I'm so happy I can share the love for this band !!! Delighted you also enjoyed their music! Everything released so far is pure gold, really looking forward to hearing more of their material in the future! I unfortunately missed their American Conquest tour, really hoping they will come back to the states soon and hit up the west coast next time!! The Skyclad song you shared was very cool btw! hadstur , I recall when 'Siege Ubsessed' was released. I was struck by how dinky the album art looked In a good way of course! I don't use tik tok, but i'm always surprised by what bands/artists blow up there. Can be the most random and overlooked stuff that suddenly goes viral Currently listening to Shadows: It's not very heavy at all, feels sort of adjacent to Spell's 'Tragic Magic' album which I adore ・゚✧*:・゚

I recently picked up a secondhand CD copy of 'With Fear I kiss The Burning Darkness' by At The Gates for a measly £2.50
They are a band who had somehow passed me by which is a shame because they are pretty great and I dig this album!
