Hey!
I don't consider myself a huge anime fan but there are some exceptional anime movies and series that I absolutely love.
Most of my favourites are fantasy or medieval oriented, kinda "serious" stuff. You won't find stupid gags and "funny facies" in the ones pointed out below.
My personal tops are:
1. Princess Mononoke
Simply a masterpiece. Amazing soundtrack (easily my top3 of all time), great animation, world, story and universal message.
I saw it for the first time as a kid in a small cinema in my hometown. I had to attend with my father cause it was rated "15+". It was a groundbreaking experience. Since then I watch it at least once a year with my father, brother and younger sister and the only other movie that has this privilege is LOTR trilogy, which probably says a lot.
It's simply beautiful, universal tale.
I like also most of the Ghibli Studio productions. But this one will always be my number 1.
2. Berserk (1997 version)
Amazing series set in medieval times. Characters, plot, animation, politics, fantasy elements and an amazing soundtrack (that probably most DS fans would appreciate). It just has it all.
If you'll give it a try mind that the real plot starts on the second episode.
8,7 rating on IMDB is not a joke. A must-watch.
3. Vinland Saga
The newest one on my list. Anime series about Vikings? So many things could go wrong with that. But well... it didn't.
It's simply an amazing story, full of deeper thoughts, ethics, politics and violence. Character development is top notch, probably the best I've seen in anime. Some of my friends dislike the second season, but for me, it just proved the greatness of the series.
There are also some amazing DSque tracks in the soundtrack:
Imdb rating: 8,8. For me it's the greatest anime series of the last two decades. No joke.
The only things I dislike in Berserk and Vinland Saga are the opening and ending songs. But you can easily skip that.
Here in Poland all three are on netflix. Give them a try. Even if you dislike japanese style of drawing you won't regret it cause beside visual aspects there have so much more to offer.
Do you have any similar recommendations? I would love to see another "serious" anime in the fantasy/medieval setting.
