I think the Italian Evol would deserve a thread here, especially seeing that practically half of the first album(s) is dungeon synth!
It's also a band I consistently forgot to nominate for Andrew's honourable mentions.
The themes on the first demo "The Tale of the Horned King" and the debut album "The Saga of the Horned King" (video above) are darker and clearly Satanic with touches of medieval witchcraft and generally that wonderfully cheesy pseudo-medieval atmosphere, leaning more towards The Cottage and The Castle than The Crypt, to borrow a bit of terminology.
Interestingly, the debut album is basically the first demo re-recorded and expanded and similarily the second album "Dreamquest" is the (first half or side A of) second demo "The Dark Dreamquest part I" treated same. The themes are suddenly all in full HD H.P.Lovecraft / Cthulhu vein, to the great delight of young Velkaarn of over twenty years ago! I was a big HPL fan and naturally "The Dark Dreamquest" was and still remains among my favourite demo tapes. It also helps that it was among the first (foreign) UG demos I bought back in '94 from some Finnish distro I believe.
Both demos and some bonus live songs were released on a compilation titled "Dies Irae", link follows.
I mentioned "Dreamquest" expands on the first part of the demo II, the extra track "Witchlord" consisting of the second half is a step back to the themes of the first demo and it gets re-recorded on the "Ancient Abbey" EP, the title track of which appears on the third and final album "Portraits"
I haven't been listening to "Portraits" (or "Ancient Abbey" for that matter) nearly as much as the first two albums, partially due not owning copies for a long time. I suppose I'd rate them higher had I a stronger bond to them.
So, anybody else into some Italian cheese? I can't be the only one, even if Evol's always been something of a guilty pleasure.
