Not my doing, but someone's posted a solid collection of Tolkien-inspired art here: imgur.com/gallery/SSf0AIt's well-curated & I imagine the aesthetics will appeal to a big chunk of this forum. Many different artists represented, though unfortunately only credited via watermarks. Here's a preview image (Fingolfin facing Morgoth):

Man, how have I never heard of this book before?! Is the writing in it any good? Really digging this cover illustration, reminds me of both illuminated manuscripts & western Russian folk-art:

Yeah it's pretty well written in my opinion. I don't how 'pure' or accurate it is, sounds like according to the page I linked that some people like it less than other books that attempt the same thing, but I think it's good. It goes into all kinds of stuff from Hobbit culture to plants.

Those illustrations are very beautiful. #5 Great Eagles seems to be from Tim Hildebrandt, but I am not sure about it. thekeeper: The Tolkien Bestiary is one of those books I would love to have in my Tolkien collection. I saw it on Goodreads and it seemed very interesting and informative. I hope I can buy it later on, because I finally get some extra money since I am done with my driving lessons and everything which costed almost all my savings. Something to look forward to.

Is that laketown? Why not? The middle earth i have pictured in my mind when i read the books have faded since I saw the movies.
Edit: No it is not laketown. It is an imagenary castle.

Ted Nasmith, the one who did the painting in the opening post, is a genius. The best Tolkien artist for sure. I often have his art as my desktop wallpaper.

He's a good musician too, I see (and hear): www.tednasmith.com/music/He should make some DS music as well Best Tolkien artist... I don't know. There are already some great illustrators as well. Alan Lee. Tolkien himself! Angus Mc Bride is one of my favorite. John Howe also defined the Tolkien world. But for sure Ted Nasmith is among the top illustrators!

Maybe I was a bit hasty to say he was the BEST, but he's certainly my favorite. Honestly I don't really like Alan Lee's work very much. I'm not familiar with those other two by name (after googling I recognize some images) but they seem pretty great.

The main thing I personally rather dislike in the works of the most well-known and universally recognized Tolkien-inspired artists (e.g. Nasmith, Lee, Howe) is - paradoxically - their too ' realistic' style and approach. I feel that such approach bereaves Tolkien world of the greater part of its deep fairy-tale mistery and dream-like quality. For me, the best Tolkien artists try to catch and express this aerial imaginary quality of vast dreamy expanses and visionary landscapes (maybe with the tint of a kind of infantile view) by graphical means. Off the fly I'd name Roger Garland and Hildebrandt brothers. EDIT: The main Tolkien art source - tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Portal:Images

I have this book too and I love it. Primarily illustrated by Ian Miller. Most people know him from his work for Games Workshop but he also illustrated Tolkien. Orcs Nazgul It's a bit hard to find higher-resolution images unfortunately but I strongly recommend picking up the Tolkien Bestiary if you ever get the opportunity. And I would also second many of the other recommendations itt, particularly Nasmith, Howe, Hildebrandt and Lee.

Really kool textual descriptions and histories of things in that book. I got it when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and thought it was so fascinating. I think I may still have it somewhere. Surprisingly deep book, even goes into some plants.
