Ok the title says it all : Since the top 10 artists thread came into an appreciation of Immortal and especially of At The Heart Of Winter, I felt (besides not wanting to hijack and off topic more the thread) bad seeing no Immortal thread on the metal subforum (hope I didn't miss it).. So, hoping those post could be merged here too, I'll start the thread continuing that discussion : Immortal is simply legend. The albums with a huge height of ATHOW are iconic on what this kind of music is about. FROSTbitten black metal at its best Artistically, they are legend, they give no shits ,from producing the cult classic (parodies included ) Call of the Wintermoon videoclip to the more serious Mighty Ravendark... Also, they must be included in more "meme" pics of the internet age (funny pics like santa with them on the background) than any other METAL, or even I guess any other band... And, again, At The Heart Of Winter... Too bad they ended up splitting up.. No more word, let us hear your appreciation for Immortal !! OPTIONAL : *ATHOW CD *ATHOW Top Wear Here are mine photographed just for this : (Yes I know my hooded top is NOT official merchandise but one of those massively that style things that were in metal shops at least in Greece in 1998-2000.. STILL, that certain top has served my well, I have worn THE fuck out of it (Stadiums, after bjj being +10kilos from current etc etc) and still is INTACT like 18 years I have it... And on the back it has the new back then Immortal logo .. A really appropriate IMMORTAL top , never dies hehe

They rule so hard. Pure Holocaust and At the Heart of Winter I think are the best, but I've been really digging Battles in the North lately. People always talk shit on it, but I think it blasts pretty good.

I love Immortal a lot! Of course they were one of the first black metal bands I was into (next to Summoning). I lilke their music, but perhaps I like their attitude even more because they don't take theirselves so seriously. It is a kind of a pet peeve of mine that I just HATE that try-hard cvlt/being edgy culture in the scene, so they are a delight when it comes to that. And their music is just solid. Sons of Northern Darkness is always on my mp3 player, even on one of my first mp3 players. And when it gets cold I always get this song stuck in my head. I also think that Abbath's solo project is quite fun as well.

Pure Holocaust and Battles In The North, that's where it is for me.

I saw Abbath when he came through two years ago, it was fantastic. Immortal has always been one of my favorite black metal bands.

Immortal was one of my first BM bands, just because they were being talked about a lot when I was first getting into the sound (i thinkSOND had just come out). I heard a few scattered songs but admit it didn't click until the more melodic riffing of ATHOW that really drew me, and that cd was in my discman for a long time, especially on car rides for some reason. I later got into Pure Holocaust and BITN when I started wanting stuff that was less clean sounding, and to this day Battles is a great record to listen to get very easily pumped.
Their kind of slow progression into thrashiness is interesting, since it really felt kind of gradual. I also loved Demonaz' solo album a lot, halfway between SOND and Bathory's Hammerheart.

The band never put a foot wrong got all their albums, I have the Abbath LP too but that's patchy. Hope he does something new soon.

It would take some real doing for something to knock "At the Heart of Winter" out of my favorite Black Metal album spot. I adore that record front to back. "Sons of Northern Darkness" is really not far off, though. While I love their last 4 the most, the early 4 is starting to make it's way into my listening habits. Haven't been able to sit through the first album yet, but "Pure Holocaust" is great and "Battles in the North" is starting to get through. "Blizzard Beasts" hasn't been tried yet. And yes, I like the Abbath solo album a lot, too. Look forward to a second one and what Immortal can do with their current lineup when it comes to making a 9th record (so the rumors say). Also, not Immortal, but has anyone heard Lord Belial's "Nocturnal Beast" album? That sometimes gives me similar vibes to the later Immortal records.

Just to tell you the truth, I think albums like ATHOW and SOND are not black metal. I mean, there are black metal elements through those albums, but I feel them like traditional heavy metal (classic Judas Priest or Manowar) with a thrash vein. Blizzard Beasts stands halfway between the two "eras" of Immortal, speaking of styling.
Pure Holocaust is still the truest black metal LP by Immortal, and the most musically inspired as well.

I've been told that on a few occasions, but there's something about the atmosphere that comes with the albums that makes me put them in that grouping. In reality, it doesn't matter much to me what they're really classified under, as they're lovely. If I can lose myself in a record, that's really all I want. I will, at some point, check out "Blizzard Beasts".

I fail to see how Immortal isn't black metal. If vocals were clean yes you could argue that it could be thrash, this that or anything. But in my book the vocals are in the black metal area so I can not understand the reasoning mate. Of course any objections would be interesting to read , cheers

Abbath said they initially didn't considered Immortal BM but Winter Metal or Forest Metal, don't quite remember. The early Norwegian bands strived to be distinctive and Immortal always had their own sound but its inevitable to consider them anything else but BM since they are one of the most fundamental bands of the second wave.

Thanx for the answer Almenning. I guess Abbath was using the themes/lyrics to define the genre maybe? Who knows.. But as you said the actual sound is 2nd wave BM, I agree on this!
