How many social media accounts do you have? Do you use all of them? What for? How often do you post? Any other thoughts... Aside from this forum, I have a facebook, a twitter, and a tumblr account. I don't like Facebook for a number of reasons, but since I don't live in the state where my family and old friends are from, I largely have it to keep up with them. It helps to keep up with music too, more bands update Facebook pages with new info than anything else they have online for info. I buy vapor tapes, and you kind of have to know the exact time some come out since some sell out in like 10 minutes. I don't like facebook, but it's more or less necessary for keeping up with new information regarding my main interests. I have a private twitter to talk to my friends and some people into weird philosophy stuff. I don't really use my Tumblr anymore. I mainly use a private one to upload photos in order to download them from other devices. I probably post on stuff less than ever, I mostly use everything to just to read and observe. I try to post often here, though! I definitely think social media services should be decentralized, it's the best for people's data. I've tried Diaspora, which is like the federalized Facebook alternative, but I just didn't have any friends on it. I actually don't like the format that much. Gnusocial is pretty kool. I had an account on one server for a while but the server I was on was shut down for legal reasons and I never remade on. It's essentially federalized Twitter, multiple connected hosts. List of good hosts: social.guhnoo.org/ (disclaimer: lots of anime). I guess people will use whatever their friends and family are on. I don't necessarily feel like social media as the main medium of communication is a bad thing, like how a lot of people view it to be some overwhelming force of warped, communicative disturbance, but I don't think people should post as much personal stuff as a lot do. I value privacy and anonymity a lot. I considered remaking my facebook a number of times, or making an alternative one just to interact with people I don't personally know, but it's pretty much too late at this point. Forums like this are among my favorite forms, though. I grew up with forums, and I happen to write long posts.

I'm a member on a number of forums, Facebook and Twitter + some more specialized social media like Untappd for beer. In principle, I like the old school message boards and forums best as a format, but in practice, I spend most of my social media time on Facebook these days, because it's the most active and the best way to reach a larger number of people. Twitter I mostly just hate, the whole concept promotes shallowness and superficiality. There's no way to engage in any meaningful interaction on Twitter (save for PM's).

Pretty much just go here, DS facebook group, and another unrelated bulletin board. I don't have any social media accounts with "real life" friends/family. I used to have a regular facebook account but I never used it and my wall was just people wishing me happy birthday every year, pretty depressing so I deleted it.

This forum, Facebook and tumblr and I am on a crocheting board as well. On Facebook I follow more pages and bands than friends/family. And I use Messenger for people I don't have a phone number of (I don't have a smartphone, so no Whatsapp). I have a nature/fantasy/pagan blog on tumblr, I tend to check the site more when I cannot sleep. And the crocheting board is for finding new patterns and ideas.

I have facebook for real life contacts (and to use sometimes as a means of information ofc on various subjects like DS) which I think is a good window to an outside world always, and keeps you in touch with people far away nowadays you'd probably wonder where they could be now.. I always liked Facebook just for that..
I made at some point a twitter account, but I use it exclusively to get news feeds, so I just have like 100 ppl/news sites (games, science, IT etc etc) I follow to keep up with news since classic media news site go from bad to worse for like many years now.
I made a tumbler also for the same reason although I dont really use it, I only have subscribed to like 15 pages and that's why I made it, so I don't keep bookmarks but I just have them followed on site..
Besides that nothing else from "social media" ..
BUT I use/watch/lurk on a number of "classic" oldschool forums like this one, again on various subjects..

Most news sites seem to invest more time in clickbait posts, with headlines that are even more exaggerated than a few years back. And most of the times the stories aren't that interesting or lacking of in depth background stories anymore. A shame really, a few years back I spent a lot of time in reading the news, (big and small and various subjects) and lately it has become less interesting.

Not a fan of social-media-networks like facebook, but it has become nearly impossible to avoid them as online communication with real-life contacts has shifted so drastically in that direction. As one of original facebook users since 2004, it's been quite a revelation to observe the gradual yet persistent shortening in online public attention span through the site's numerous iterations and format changes. As recently as 2010 it was still possible to exchange thoughtful long posts in groups or feed comments, maybe due to the fact that many still used laptops or desktops checking their facebook and were actually sitting down for it. The smartphone social media apps really dug a grave for that user style, and insta-sharing content from other sites turned facebook into an overload of trivia, with random personal trivia sprinkled in between. Too many are using it to share or break the socio-political 'news', for which the platform serves poorly as its fast pace only invites twitch reactions and pure emotion-level gut responses without allowing the content its due digestion time. Too hasty, as Treebeard would say.
As a friend of complete sentences and long paragraphs, I find the classic forum format much more appealing, especially for something as introspective and creatively personal as dungeon synth. The FB group is both valuable and necessary, and I still follow it closely, but as with all other FB groups its fast pace and frenetic unpredictable nature of how its posts are filtered in the feed makes it hard to follow sometimes. It also strikes me as being perhaps more consumer-oriented in its format (news updates, release infos, collection pics show 'n tells), to flip through on the go and maybe post some quick comments and move on. Good for keeping up with release updates, but on a personal note such a fast-paced format strikes me as counterintuitive to the contemplative, introverted moods this genre often evokes. Almost as if the personal becomes diluted in a crowd. Forum message boards are still kings at rolling out immersive discussions.

Anyone a veteran of the 'forum format' site? I never used a proper old school BBS, but I've been using forums since I was maybe 10 years old. Joined the AFI forum initially, later moved to a straight edge one I was on until about age 16, quite a large forum lapse after that, have been a lurker on Style Zeitgeist for a couple years now, had a Stench Forums account before it got deleted and remade but never posted, but this is the only actual forum I currently actively use.
What other forums has everyone been a part of?

Never was really a social media guy. Years ago i was active in a german misanthropic forum but they kicked me out after i posted some burzum stuff and defending my taste of music. Also i never really was fine with this fb thing (or other over loaded social sites). To much shitposting and internet warriors... I really like this forum (lurked around here about over a year), especially the polite and calm atmosphere. It just feels like home...

especially the polite and calm atmosphere. It just feels like home... it's because we're all from different corners of the World, and it would be too challenging to "fight" in English just kidding, of course!

I used to be a heavy forum dweller, but it kind of tapered off for a number of years. I use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and put together events for people to hang out (An unapologetic wrestling fan, I use Facebook events to let people know the next PPV and what time to show up, etc.) and do minor promotion work for music I do. I used to use Twitter during the few months I did Let's Plays like 4 years ago. Now it mostly just sits there. I prefer RateYourMusic, as it allows me to be creative a bit and surrounds me with musical related items and like-minded people, which makes me happy. Use Last.FM, but that's mostly for music tracking, but I do talk to people on there. Am also on a couple video game related social sites (MetaGamerScore & RetroAchievements). Mostly browse Reddit instead of engaging in conversation. Don't have Instagram.

This forum and Discord. I really do enjoy the forum format and wish there were more active forums left but everything seems to slowly move to Facebook and degenerate into a mess of shouting, arguing and trivial nonsense. Discord is pretty bad too a lot of the time but it has some uses.

A couple forums that I rarely check, a Facebook I barely ever look at, Reddit though I don't talk much, and Discord which I like (since I left all the servers I didn't like). I have a couple other accounts (twitter and VK) that I don't/barely ever use and never check, so I don't count them.
