Since my analog 8 tracker has now died i thought i would give members on here a few tips if you have a four tracker (analog) and maybe find it a touch restrictive.
I won't give away all my "secrets" of composition BUT i will say this, working with Cool Edit/four tracker is simple.
Here's what you can do.
- Record what is needed on the four available tracks (for ex - bassline, metronome beat, guitar, keyboard)
This is vague ...but this is one way of doing things. this is without even touching a computer! completely relying on using those 4 tracks in analog.
- Get the required lead (line out lead) although i've never paid this amount for one www.futureshop.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2752#.WWVVw4TyvIU
With that you can go into your "Line in" on the four tracker and set the "line in" on your PC which you will find in the control pannel.
-Now you have two options to get your 4 tracks into the PC.
1. Either transfer all four tracks "live" with panning. these will be in "stereo" BUT the tracks will in-turn be a "track"
2. Individually (following the metronome beat) you can put track 1, 2,3 & 4 in as separate tracks. This is probably best because you have the tracks completely separate and therefore can mix each track individually.
All sounds should be saved as WAV files and where these can be bulky you will certainly have a good quality sound.
So if you now have tracks 1-4 in the computer you can choose to either
1. Add tracks via the PC ...this means plugging a keyboard into your four tracker and using the tracker almost as a "middle man" you can do this "live" with a microphone or "line in" which simply means having a guitar lead into the 4 tracker and the line in lead in the BLUE slot (line in) on your PC. ALWAYS record via the line in ...the RED mic line will NOT do the job.
2. Deleting/erasing any of the other tracks (apart from the metronome track) on the four tracker therefore freeing up the space to record new tracks on the old ones.. (since afterall, you already have the tracks on the PC) therefore track 1 (we'll call Metronome) shouldn't be erased but 2,3 & 4 can be deleted and "overdubbed" this, on the whole might be a bit more of a long winded process but it saves you sitting infront of a PC recording. (personally i'd find it more appealing) also, the sound quality should be fine too.
If anyone has any questions or needs help with anything please do ask.
I am a million miles away from a technical wizard but i may be able to help with four trackers and especially in the recording.
Personally i can't fault this method and with the warmth you get from a four tracker it's a very nice way of doing things. In turn, you don't have so much of that "clinical" sound you might have if everything was done digitally. still, horses for courses.
