Hi all,
I'm wondering how YOU create Dungeon Synth, in particular what instruments do you use? Do you use a mixture of hardware - keyboards etc - and DAW? Purely hardware recorded analogue? Perhaps even all through DAW and Plugins?
Please feel free to be specific.
I'm currently trying my hand at Dungeon Synth and right now all I have in my inventory is Reaper and some plugins. I'm interested in how others create their works

I've done the lot. Purely programmed/sequenced notes, live played digitally and recorded, recorded hardware synth, sampling. For Caoranach, I used some fairly clean sounding VSTs, but I work much more with keyboard replica VSTs now, fm synth and old yamaha stuff. I'm fond of percussion in DS, so I have a real big sampling library of percussion instruments from a few dozen keyboards. I do everything in Mixcraft or Audacity. I've been meaning to get a Tascam 4 track but I just haven't committed yet.
I know Reaper is pretty popular but haven't used it, seems pretty similar to Mixcraft. A lot of people ask for VST recommendations, but I don't like giving them because it tends that projects come to revolve around certain synth sounds that become commonly used. Keep us posted on your music progress!

Hardware only for me. Recorded, trimmed, EQed with Audacity. I have a few Casios from the 80s/90s & occasionally use a Microkorg for texture.

All hardware. My main keyboard is a casio wk 1800 sample based synth, also occasionally use some others like yamaha pss 80 and pss 130 and a microkorg. First few ranseur albums were recorded onto a cassette recorder with lo fi mics and then uploaded. I mix in noise and eq on audacity even though it's a shit program but I'm used to it.

90% hardware - very occasionally i'll use software synths from Logic or a soundfont but generally I prefer to play things much more. thekeeper, what Yamaha style vSTs do you use?

For my part, being new in the composition of dungeon synth, I have no place and money for hardware. So I use software exclusively. VST and samples.

The most important thing is finding the best composition method for you. I worked by hardware only, then a synth + an Atari computer (with Cubase), then only VST and samples on Fruity Loops ... I did good things and I did shit, in each " era ".

Who not a modern computer? I can not remember.

Because these old microcomputers never had the Blue Screen of Death. (Excellent, your Bandcamp. As an old player of Amstrad CPC, I really dig your sounds)

And what about inspiration ? I mean, we talk about software or hardware, but how do you get inspiration ? I'm a bit frustrated since some days because, when I go to sleep, I have lot of "riffs" in my mind, and when I woke up, everything is vanished. It's a bit strange i know

Get yourself a secondhand keyboard with a line-out & when the inspiration hits you, go record some sketches of your mental riff, to be visited & improved later (or not). Write down the key & you'll probably be able to re-figure it out.
