I've got this one too--these guys are really good friends of mine. Lots of killer bands in the Seattle area. For Maiden, I'll always be a Seventh Son and Somewhere in Time guy, but the debut has some of their best and most immediate tracks.

Maiden fan reporting in - I got into metal buying Iron Maiden's Seventh Son(tape of course, still somewhere have it) as a little kid back in the day you can imagine that Maiden talk is always a great thing!! I would never really like to distinguish anything from their 7 golden first albums, all are masterpieces really and defining of not just metal, but music in general! But just for talk's sake , if someone not listening to metal/Maiden asks me where it would be a nice place to start, and wanted to have a great time I'd go with Piece of Mind and Powerslave, but how then you can't go back and remind everyone that Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son where so much ahead of their time and masterful that also can't be missed, and then I'd certainly add up the rest three golden albums two with Di Anno who was also everything best for their early style (I could never stand the otherwise great Dickinson sing Phantom of the Opera, Prowler, it looses all of its street punk quality Di Anno gave).. All 7 first are a must really, for metal fans or music fans in general imho

Never been fond of Maiden much. They have found their style and used it to death. Their albums with Blaze are epitome of this jogtrot (solo Blaze is awesome though). They just thought they grabbed their luck by the tail to jump to the mainstream train but this train took them away from originality to commercial stuff.
There are much more interesting NWOBHM children like Blitzkrieg, Satan or ingenious Holocaust.
Also check Al Atkins ans Atkins-May projects (the first Judas Priest singer), it's brilliant.

Flagris Can you please expand on the Maiden topic ? Cause I don't think I got exactly what you're saying there. You don't like their style but throwing a "commercial" stuff line there about stuff including all the era up to Seventh Son is way unrelated to whatever point you're trying to make... And Maiden are obviously the number one metal band ever and that's not even debatable, if only for all their 7 first monumental masterpieces, they are the absolute legends, up there only with the Kings of Metal , MANOWAR. These two (along with early era Metallica) have shaped what is Metal not only as influence, reach, dedication, fans, lives, you name it, but above and most of all for their early era discography which is what Metal is all about. Yes, that 80s spirit of pure Metal right from the heart from people who loved playing guitars and banging their heads to loud music. Thank you for the rant mate, I enjoyed it to be honest. And welcome to the forum , nice to see new faces and thanx for the recommendations, I'd really like to see more recommendations by you for both metal and Dungeon Synth just to see more of your insight, there are some great threads here for recommendations, Griantor did some excellent ones, check those out.

Maiden are obviously the number one metal band ever and that's not even debatableWhy not debatable? They are NOT number one, neither by seniority, nor by superiority. Harris is quite mediocre composer, to say it mildly, just listen to his bass lines separately or even better to his solo project, it's really awful. McBrain is quite mediocre drummer too. Dickinson is completely awful in Maiden, it's physically unpleasant to hear his monotone high-pitch wailings (and just compare it to his solo works... wow, it turns out that he really CAN sing!). They just were lucky to ride the surging wave, and found their way by offering the stereotype 'heavy metal for everyone', not heavy per se at all, not inventive, and not riff-laden. Kinda metallized galloping speed rock. This is the gist of the term 'commercial' - they offered exactly what people wanted at the right time, that's all. No need to be a musical genius to do it. People wanted some watered-down metal-for-everyone, just to impress their girlfriends and to terrorize their neighbours - people got it. It's not Art, it's Commerce. Oh, 'they influenced a miriad of bands', how could I forgot... I recently saw the same kind of discussion on Facebook, only about KISS. And 90% of metalheads said like 'OK, they influenced a miriad of bands but this doesn't make 'em a decent band all the same!' Just like Metallica (the whole industry worked for them... where are they now? where are those riffs? just listen to their albums of post-Load era! it's pure impotency) or Manowar (the kings of posers, pshaw... where are they now? the same impotency). Tipton or Iommi (just to name the most obvious ones) are musicians of another level absolutely, comparing to Harris & Co.

Sorry mate but when someone is saying Dickinson is mediocre (not to even mention the things about Nicko Mc Brain and Steve Harris), I can't take it seriously. AT ALL, I mean what the fuck really man are you talking about... You obviously don't like the style, I think you really don't like METAL at all imho, but it's one thing to say " I don't like Maiden (Manowar, Metallica anything) , and another to say the previous statements which show that you probably shouldn't be listening to metal and just stick to your beloved old rock or whatever stuff you enjoy.. I rest my case..

And personally I love Maiden and agree with everything element0s said. Seventh Son and Somewhere In Time are incredible. Also love the lesser known NWOBHM bands especially because its kinda punk sounding minus the shitty musicianship lol. Whoever wants to talk shit on Bruce Dickson needs to at least understand how impressive it is to sing the way he does - maybe you don't like his vocal tone(s)? I get that, but the guy is an absolute BEAST when it comes to vocal performance, there are very FEW like him.

I was just messaging you on FB not too long ago! Blazon Rite is great. Highly recommended. For more obscure NWOBHM I really get down with Legend, Witchfynde, Saracen, Wolf, Crucifixion and shit like that. Love me some Satan, Tygers and Raven too. One of my favourite eras of music.

New Eternal Champion came out earlier this month - Ravening Iron. Well worth checking out for sure, I thin it is utterly brilliant and definitely one of my favourite albums of the year.

So after repeated listens, I'm confused to say that my own verdict is not in favor of Eternal Champions last, contrary to the general applaud I read around - Decibel has it in 2nd best place for the year and @ Encyclopedia Metallum both reviews are total praise! For whatever it counts, I adore all previous discography of EC - even the many singles-one of them replayed in this one and not imho in a better way! If I can try to find what I didn't like, I'd say that it's just not memorable. While previous releases had more dense atmosphere,in this release the (fewer?) synths along with the heavy sound worship of Maiden heavy in the previous release being here mostly leaning towards a faster early Metallica kinda worship in the end feels just less memorable.. Though I'll probably "spin" ( if you can "spin" the mp3s lol) it many more times, I certainly didn't enjoy it as I expected.. Maybe need even more "time" than listens atm, but dunno if I change my mind.. In other news this prompted me to end up finding about yearly best of lists starting to popping up in metal, so if anyone has any top-5 or something bring it on!! As I mentioned I was looking on Decibel's list but many unknown stuff to me so dunno what to expect.. I also think we got to start the 2020 best DS thread soon(TM) but that's for another thread..

It had been a while since I last heard Armour of Ire, I remember liking it but can't remember much about it. The new one took a few listens but I dig it. I liked that weird little Dungeon Synth release they put out as well.
