Does anyone else keep up with new popular music? I try to listen to every new record that is getting attention. Some of it is good and some of it is really bad. I have a soft spot for garage / psych which is why Thee Oh Sees and Parquet Courts are alone side more popular records. Radiohead is in my personal Top 3 of all time so there is little they can do to not be the best thing I have heard this year.

I'm totally cheating by using dark folk/neofolk releases but whatever. Didn't hugely enjoy all that many of 2016's non-metal releases outside of these. That's not to say that all I listened to this year was metal, but a lot of the non-metal stuff I listened to was from previous years: lots of The Smiths; Orchid (90s) are one of my favourite hardcore punk bands; Carpenter Brut's Trilogy from last year; and loads of folk music from a variety of artists from the last few years.

I really liked the singles off of Atrocity Exhibition but didn't enjoy the album all the way through. With that said, I like anything Danny Brown does. Peteurbator is always fun to listen to though I found The Uncanny Valley really long as a whole album. Did you listen to Swans this year?

Peteurbator is always fun to listen to though I found The Uncanny Valley really long as a whole album. Did you listen to Swans this year? I loved it. Only tracks I didn't like were 'White Lines' and 'Get Hi', but otherwise I thought it was one of the best hip-hop albums I've ever heard. I definitely found The Uncanny Valley too long at back when it was first released, but honestly over time as I've come to enjoy literally every track on the album, I've realised I simply wouldn't remove any of the songs. The only thing I'd do is have the album end on 'Souls at Zero' rather than the title track. He also put on an incredible show in Leeds earlier this year, which I was really surprised by because I imagined that a synthwave show would just be pressing the play button and walking off stage or something! I didn't get around to listening to Swans, no. I'm not hugely familiar with them, though I've a mental note that I need to check out some of their early albums at some point. I've found them fairly impenetrable in the past, but I've only really listened to The Seer and I think the one before that.

I think my list would be:
1. Wardruna - Runaljod: Ragnarok 2. Forndom - DauΓ°ra Dura 3. Solwulo - Sol 4. Nytt Land - SkΓΆpun: Songs From the Elder Edda 5. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool 6. Wolcensmen - Songs From the Fyrgen 7. David Bowie - Blackstar 8. The KVB - Of Desire 9. Esben and the Witch - Older Terrors 10. Savages - Adore Life
I have to say that I listen the most to the folk stuff, than the rest of the list.

I think my tops this year, just based on amount of time in heavy rotation: David Bowie - Blackstar Chance the Rapper - Coloring Book A Tribe Called Quest - We Got it From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service Van Der Graaf Generator - Do Not Disturb Frank Ocean - Blonde Virus - Memento Collider Kayo Dot - Plastic House on Base of Sky (Both this and Virus have Metal origins but are I think pretty firmly not metal) Xenia Rubinos - Black Terry Cat Ulver - ATGCLVLSSCAP Satoko Fujii Tobira - Yamiyo Ni Karasu
ANOHNI's Hopelessness would be a runner up.
