It's funny that crystallogic13 would bump this, as I was about to do so yesterday! I was able to snag a M8 Tracker and was scouring the internet for tracker dungeon synth to take inspiration and to find samples to use. I've been looking for a portable music making device for ages after making music with LSDJ ages ago but wanting to do more than bleeps and blops now. Any tips to find dungeon synth/orchestral samples? Should I just make my own?

Hails Crystallogic13. That's awesome. I have not seen this documentary yet but will watch it soon. As far as my channel, I suppose I could say I took a break from everything DS music-related since my NEDS performance last April. Unfortunately that included that channel. This board here is the only place where it seemed to have garnered any interest. That said, I have more songs to upload and more digging to do!.. Including songs I have on my computer from the 90s that I can't find anywhere else online. I want to make a long-form video with multiple tracks before I upload single tracks again. Maybe I'll do that soon. Thanks for reaching out, maybe it'll get the fire going again, heh. Sirensbay, if you need samples, I can send you some stuff or point you in the right direction. I've got a lot. Shoot me a DM here or an email at khandambient at Gmail. Com Cheers

Hails arillius glad to see you around!! I hope everythings ok in general, regarding DS though yeah mate it's always great to have some variety always, take a break to miss etc, our mood of course , even weather , time ... Each music genre has its place and time and it's always better to listen it when at maximum other environment factors will contribute towards appreciating and enjoying specific type of music more hope Im not too stoned to explain what I'm thinking mate, but in short, always good to have you here and your channel and diggings , so much great excavating work!! Check out the documentary short for some sparks you might be needing Regards!!!

I'm gonna second Deflemask as a recommendation for doing chip stuff. It's extremely versatile, well-supported, and cross-platform across android/iOS/Mac/PC. But it does have a bit of a learning curve even if you're used to other trackers. Not too bad, but it took me a bit to get the hang of. My track Confluence was made in Deflemask. Another fun thing to play with that is tracker-adjacent, but a bit more like a weird modular synth and a DAW had a baby, is Bespoke. It's hard to describe, and fiddly, but no more so than any big ol' rack synth things. I grew up on ScreamTracker/MultiTracker/Impulse Tracker originally, and wrote a ton of music in all three. Nowadays, though, I do basically all of my work in Renoise, which is a tracker that has support for a lot of modern DAW stuff (including VST instruments and plugins, plus AU components on Mac).

Does Defelmask exclusively feature chiptune style sounds or does it include other timbres? Also just saw you’re in NC too, hails neighbor!

Depends on what you mean by “chiptune sounds” — some of the emulated devices do have at least one channel you can stuff arbitrary samples into. Also the PC-Engine (Neo Geo) emulation is capable of some pretty complex FM synth.
But yeah, it will definitely primarily be “chip” sounds… gameboy/nes/genesis/etc kind of sounds.

Deflemask, to me, is the best thing to make Sega Genesis sounding music. I know the SNES has a better chip and all that, but there's some charm to be about the roughness of the Genesis chip (Yamaha YM2612). Deflemask seemed real fun and I know the dev team is constantly updating it. It's been a year or two since I've used it but I should load it up again. I was trying to make some Golden Axe II themed DS but didn't finish it.
What first turned me onto it was this game I play on Steam with my son called "Duck Game" - yeah dumb name, I know. But it's fun as hell and features a modern Genesis-inspired soundtrack, which I believe was made using Deflemask.

I really have to dabble in Renoise. I use Schismtracker these days because it's literally an Impulse Tracker clone and that's what I'm most familiar with. What is the learning curve for Renoise? I suppose it should come easy if one is used to creating music with trackers.

There’s some learning curve, but the basics work pretty much the same as most trackers. There’s just a lot more you can do on top of it.
