It was definitely Glenn Danzig's Black Aria that set the tone for me back in 10th grade when it came out. It was an exception in my music collection. I used to listen to it while reading Dragonlance novels or playing the CRPG AD&D "Gold Box" games -- Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Champions of Krynn, etc. Those games are also what got me into dungeon synth earlier this year. I was digging around for info on their history and discovered Synth Bard's homage to them, Gold Box Renditions. That did it for me. Track two wasn't even over before I was searching around for other releases like it. I have to say, buying cassette storage drawers to house my expanding collection of dungeon synth was not something I had envisioned myself doing at 44! Here's Gold Box Renditions with its character card insert and some old friends. My homage to an homage.

Wow, nice one matt, respect for the nostalgia trip!! I need to take some pics of my own since maybe other people will enjoy, but I got to say I feel so envious in a good way in your very nice SSI collection there!! Crosspost it to the computer games or rpg games thread we have here, it's got endless oldschool rpg vibes emitting..! And I also think there's a strong very strong connection with people discovering or connecting with Dungeon Synth through the RPGs or computer-RPGs chain, there's certainly enough people who wholeheartedly enjoy the specific aesthetics in DS releases and one of the many great themes supporting the genre in general I'd say.. Again, respect for the pic, you got me planning to make a showcase of mine and upload, some nice stuff to see, but I got to take the time to gather some small and big boxes n stuff

As a kid I always liked fantasy novels, warhammer, dungeons & dragons, etc. and spent a lot of time listening to ambient music on the radio (Hearts of Space played on Saturday nights on my public radio affiliate station for years and years), so the groundwork was there for awhile, but the specific catalyst was probably running across a CD copy of Satyricon's "Dark Medieval Times". Up to that point I was mostly into thrash, death, hardcore, and punk, and didn't know much about black metal. The synth beats and instrumental interludes really captured my attention/imagination, and then in seeking out more I got into Mortiis, Summoning, etc. In the early 2010s I found a few "modern" DS projects, and then getting to see Mortiis and so many other great acts live at the first Dungeon Siege really cemented my passion/fascination.

Getting interested again because of FIEF - V!
Started with the 2 classics (Mortiis Demo and the Mighty Wongraven Album) back in the day…

i was showing people a demo to a synth/folk EP i was working on, and multiple people compared it to dungeon synth. i had never really heard of dungeon synth before, but it instantly clicked once i had started listening. By pure coincidence I had been working on a fantasy inspired folky synth project using cheap, digital sounding synth flutes and harps.
To be honest it doesn't really sound like dungeon synth at all outside the intro, but that comparison was what first introduced me to the concept.

I must confess that I'm only starting to become aware of Dungeon Synth.
Was very into fantasy/sci-fi, D&D and Warhammer etc. in my younger years.
Got into skating and punk rock as a teenager and started playing bass. Became enamored by The Misfits, Bauhaus, early Cure, Christian Death. Later came Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Lycia and so on. Started to create music using an early version of Cakewalk, a Sound Canvas and an M1. Was inspired by all of the above but somehow didn't turn out....right. At least not for the bands I was playing in.
Fast forward to now and it seems there are a lot of people producing and listening to music similar to what I was creating back then. Not that what I was doing was terribly original or especially interesting, but perhaps I recognize a similar sensibility?
Let's just say that you have my attention.

Hello gambali and welcome!! If you're into fantasy & ADnD + I think you've come to the right place and right music genre! Besides DS of course there are threads for all genres and people here all have very very wide listenings and backgrounds, be sure to explore to find recommendations but to also give us all some more too See you around , also I'm always sure there have been some very interesting/successful tries at mixing punk with DS and BM but my memory doesn't serve me right at the moment nor my music lists so someone else will probably help when he reads it! Regards and welcome again!

Hello all, I'm new here and this seemed to be as a good a thread as any to post on first. I love basically anything fantasy, and I play Warhammer 40k and games like it. I also play multiple instruments and I've always been interested in both metal and synthwave. I guess I found out about Dungeon Synth basically by trying to find something that combined my love of fantasy with synthesizers. I found erang and then searched under the tag dungeon synth, then I got hooked on basically all of it. although early mortiis is definitely one of my favs. Through dungeon synth I got into black metal, and now I listen to both dungeon synth and black metal quite frequently.

^Awesome testimony! Welcome to the forums and to dungeon synth in general! Thanks! I've been lurking here for a month or two and thought I'd better join since I was starting to make my own music and this seems like one of the best places to talk with other artists and such. Plus, I love communities like this, and the dungeon synth community is definitely one of the best communities I've ever run into.

^Yeah, as they're pretty generous too, lot of the Bandcamp stuff is either very cheap (Fogweaver's albums are only like $1.50 now when he could get away with probably $6-8 each?) or "name your price".
Look forward to hearing your stuff too!

I was exposed to it since I was a teen by way of loving black metal around the early 2000s and back then I was all about energetic music so DS's more atmospheric and moody qualities escaped me, particularly because there was less variety and pretty much everyone only reccomended the classics which I found too slow.
It was until recently and after years of developing an appreciation for synth music that Vaporwave introduced me to the concepts of "storytelling through soundscapes" or "evocation of an imagined place through sounds" which even though it sounds dumb opened a world of possibilites. I always had a fondness for concept albums (King Diamond ftw) and fantasy/historic narratives and now with the sort of renaissance of DS there were a ton of different albums of a variety of styles that perfectly merged all of these things I liked.
I feel like when done well DS is superbly interactive music as it engages your imagination with the music, the album art and the stories thought out for the music or viceversa. Evocative to the point that it's spellbinding.

Evocative to the point that it's spellbinding. Very nicely put, well said.. Personally as you can guess I've been hooked to this genre since 2016 full on, trying not to miss a release, just to not miss another rough diamond .. There are only so few genres you end up wanting to listen to almost everything, just in case you don't miss something .. Or as others also have put it, each song , each next song in a random many artists' playlist feels like another quest, adventure, spell or bard chant even a treasure to be (re)discovered.. Always nice looking into this thread and get vibes from the similar appreciation of the genre from people all over the world.. Edit : I will hate it when this thread turns to page 4 and the beautiful TSR/SSI Golden Box stuff doesn't make my day even more
