Oh and I was talking to Chaucerian Myth about this but visual art, especially abstract expressionism, is very inspiring for me. I'm not sure if visual art or other non-musical media have been brought up in this thread but I'm sure that's huge for many. Is this thread also open to discussing the games, books, paintings, etc. that inspire us?

Great idea for a thread. I was going to make one along the same lines before I saw this. Burzum is my main inspiration for Ephemeral Landscapes. Especially the ambient tracks on Filosofem. But I'm also very inspired by Oneohtrix Point Never's ambient music and James Ferraro's most recent neoclassical stuff. Both of these were huge influences for my second EP. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBLybGZN_ekwww.youtube.com/watch?v=4Wso1GD_R2E

Also i used what i have learnt of byzantine church modes from my first digre release where i used church modes mostly but stole parts from classical and even modern. I stole parts from metallica after seeing their some kind of monster on netflix. When doing my done. But not releasef album i was inspiered by viking tales mostly and almost no church music. We get ideas from all around us. Glory to God

I have no releases, but i'm working on it.
And for now i can say that besides all your amazing DS albums, i am heavily inspired by the early years of Archive. I love the prog-house / Trip-Hop beats and dark londonic electronic effects (Which i can hear in the works of Jim Kirkwood... one of my favorites).
I am also a huge fan of classical music (from Medieval, all the way to post-modern), Many kinds of Metal and folk. Other then that which are really special to me, i do listen to everything.

Gail Laughton - Harps of the Ancient Temples was a huge influence on my Seven Wonders album. Of course, my music can't hold a candle to something like that, but that sort of fantastical reimagining of the ancient past definitely felt like a model to follow which was very fitting for DS. Also I just love the sound of the harp, and I used it pretty extensively on that album. Thank you for sharing this amazing Gem! this is truely amazing

Speaking about my All The Kingdoms album a bit: Kingdom's Gone outro was born out of an attempt to imitate Skepticism feeling at this very part -> youtu.be/lti1DTPhGRc?t=210The track's title is a straight rip-off of At The Gates' death metal song with the same name. It was done on a purpose tho and there is a different imagery behind it. Memories Looping In A Deserted House roots ascends to a riff which I made up trying to do something in the mood of early Opeth's clean parts mixed with Burzum vibe. Castle Beyond The Reach final part relies to Skepticism vibe replication once more. The whole Skepticism's Stormcrowfleet feels like an old empty majestic castle for me. Nothing of these sounds even close to any band I mentioned tho.

Early Manowar, in particular the Into glory ride, Hail to England and Sign of the Hammer albums, have a huge influence on me when writing both black metal and DS.

Fun and interesting topic! For me, some artists outside of DS that I feel have (consciously or subconsciously) influenced my work, even in the slightest way, are: King Dude, Chelsea Wolfe, Agalloch, A Forest of Stars, Rapalje, Heidevolk, Darkthrone, Taake, Regarde les Hommes Tomber, Nocturnal Depression, Make a Change... Kill Yourself, Acherontas, Nazgul, Russkaja, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Me and that Man, Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks, Those Poor Bastards and Joy Division.
Along with many classical pieces, (traditional) folk music and a lot of music from movies and series and such.

Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks, Those Poor Bastards Holy. Fuck. TPB/Lonesome Wyatt is amazing, I've been a huge fan ever since I hear Songs Of Desperation quite soon after it was released. I actually have a nigh-on complete collection of his stuff, all I'm missing is one 7" (Abominations), and then I'd have everything he's ever released on every format it has ever been released on, including both books he's written and published.

Awesome! Didn't expect to find another fan on a DS forum haha. I didn't know he had written any books tho actually, what kind of books are they and where do I find them?

You can get the second book from the official TPB website, the first one is apparently sold out. Not that you're missing out on anything important, because those books are honestly quite bad. Some sort of half-assed attempts at writing old pulp horror, I reckon, but the result is just crap. The only reason I own them is because I guess I'm a bit of a completist in this case.

I have a few definitely. I think DS and RPG stuff in the prime influence, but we all have a list of things that change how we looked at music over our lives...
Very short, underappreciated rpg on the SNES. Basically a childhood thing, as me and my father played it a lot when I was 8 or 9. The soundtrack is actually more of a rock approach, but the melodies stuck with me for a long time. I would probably not have even started playing music without this. That or I would have only listened to bluegrass my whole life.
The early albums of The Dreamside, which I know is odd as an influence but they have a very mystical and ambient fantasy element that stuck with me from teenage years.
Vidna Obmana, as well as Steve Roach. The Projekt and CMI ambient releases are such a big deal to me.
also lots of general Neoclassical Gothic/Darkwave like this.
The rest is Dungeon Synth and Black Metal influences.

I guess my influences range from classical music e.g. Bach, baroque, Wagner, twelve tones and eventually ligeti and similar, to bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Bowie, death in June, krautrock in general, atrax morgue and Maurizio bianchi, dark ambient and lot of 2nd wave black metal plus agalloch and the Cascadian scene even if the latter is fading away in my listening habits; I was definitely paying more attention to what was happening there some years ago, now I moved on drone, electronic music and toned down a bit the naturalistic influences that where once there.
Actually pretty interesting topic, glad that I finally decided to write here.

But, finally, I realize how symphonic soundtracks (Star Wars, Conan, Excalibur and other stuff from the 70s and 80s) are actually my main guiding light.
