I have often thought that DS (especially the more nature-themed variety) has a marked similarity to a lot of New Age music, which is a genre that I have had a guilty soft-spot for since the 80s. I thought it would be good to share and discuss some of this area of music here. Here's a few to begin with. Terry Oldfield - "Zen". I posted this in the FB yesterday, some nice synthesised pan flutes/shakuhachi sounds. terryoldfield.bandcamp.com/album/zenLunaria - "All Is Dream". Nice relaxing synth soundscapes. soundsofthedawn.bandcamp.com/album/all-is-dreamDavid Naegele - "Journeys Out Of Body" Upper Astral - "Journey to the Centre of the Universe"

Journeys Out of Body is one of my favourites, nice to see it getting some recognition! I have a lot of stuff released by the New World Company, the tapes are very cheap and easy to find in the UK. David Naegele, Terry Oldfield, Medwyn Goodall, Robert Slap etc. are all great.
I have an awesome tape by a guy called Colin Douglas, haven't been able to find anything about him online but you can hear one of the tracks below.

I need to get more into this genre, I most often randomly click on some vids on Youtube, but I usually use them for background music and I never keep an eye on titles and names. Going to check out the stuff you posted tomorrow!

My girlfriend got me into this stuff back in the early 2000s, and it remains to this day a big part of my own musical vocabulary. This one is a favourite of mine -

There are two or three tape-rip channels I subscribe to on YouTube which are mostly lost cassettes from the 70s and 80s. It’s really interesting to see how varied the sound is - a lot of times it borders on smooth jazz, and other time it is purely the cheap background music kind that there was so much of in the early 90s. Of course the channels themselves occasionally get taken down, disappearing and reappearing in different places like mushrooms.
I think aesthetically New Age and DS have similarities, but I feel that philosophically they are - if not opposite, at different places on the same spectrum. Just as DS can range from the most decayed sounds and hopeless melodies to the lighthearted fantasy of Fief or ambience of Foglord, New Age has within itself enough variation. But both seem to encourage introspection and “inner Journeys”, and both have something resembling a “spiritual” element to them, for lack of a better word.

Well here was one of the better charity shop albums I found recently, though it is still from the 80s:

There’s also some nice stuff on this channel. More minimal, but IMO still pretty deep as a listening experience.

Oh hey, I discovered that "should be asleep" channel a few months ago and have been enjoying some of those releases as well, like that Wet Land album for example. I particularly liked this album, reminded me of Sims 1 music, which is something that I've always been craving more of and so far is the only album that comes close:

I enjoyed this one - going for a bedroom New Age aesthetic. The first track didn’t quite do it for me but the composition is really interesting and the mood gets much deeper as it goes on, plus I love the title. moonglyph.bandcamp.com/album/carpet-cocoon

Hope y'all don't mind me bumping up this old topic As it was said elsewhere (/possibly several times), new age and dungeon synth have some common roots, as I've always felt they were distant cousins myself. The majority of new age I have is Cusco and Deuter, Cusco being a German band that had a ton of releases.
Not really representative of their stuff though, as most of it was slow, but a favorite of mine. Deuter, on the other hand, was a solo artist that, for most of his cds that I have, only had two guests play some instruments. He was one of the earlier artists in the genre ever, with his first album being released in 1971.

Great bump and music there Daytold, thumb up!! As for Cusco, great stuff and I guess at least some of us learned of this nice artist after the expose/scandal of someone lowlife "The Sprout" dungeonsynth.proboards.com/thread/843/sprout-unveiled of stole Cusco's stuff and released it as his own ... Good thing he was exposed although that didn't stop such lowlife scum from reuploading it on bandcamp again despite the expose... Thanx for the post and always on the lookout for good music, nice!

I just joined these forums a few months ago and even though I've looked at many threads I didn't see/read every single one. What a load with that guy.
