First post here on this fine forum. Hello, fellow dwellers of dungeons and cavern crawlers alike.
I saw the genre "dungeon synth" pop up among my diving within the Internet, and I was brought to the DS Archive, and here.
Never heard this type of sound before, but as I listened and was subsequently ensorcelled to another place and time, I realised that this is the sound I have been sorely missing in my life.
My initial toe-dip into the miasmic dungeon haze is still enchanting, and I must continue post-haste. So far I've been leaning more towards the Dark Ambient-centric sounds.
Currently listening to "Burzum - Dauði Baldrs" (1997). Burzum is an old-school legend you all probably know well enough, from what little I've read (-just jumped in headfirst!) A brilliantly dark journey, with a somewhat deranged yet ethereal tone throughout. You never know what could be lurking around the next corner, as shapes and sounds cast many shadows, on both the mind and the spirit...

Welcome to our lands Skeleton!! Always very interesting to listen/read how others also discover DS and their journey! Nice!!
Yes Burzum/Varg was/is have (especially up to your post, the jail albums) released tracks that are classics, I can't even remember how many covers "Tomhet" from "Hvis Lyset..." has!! Essential stuff!!
Np another classic greek oldschool DS , Ravenloft themed, nothing more to say, essential stuff too :
Corvus Neblus - Chapter I - Strahd's Possession

I just got a bunch of new tapes so I've been doing all my cooking and reading to:
Thangodrim - Prologue Thangodrim - Taur-nu-Fuin Thangodrim - Gil-Estel
Certainly has helped keep the apartment lively! I grabbed them from Out of Season. I have some more stuff in the post too!

Thought I'd rattle my way from the monastery back to the forum and give an update on my DS journey. Currently listening to Cloak & Daggere - Dìth Chealtair, which I read earlier in this thread was one of yours, thekeeper? Loving the hint of DOS and ethereal lo-fi darkness in this release. Cosmic sounds from the shadows. My favourite is The Eternal Library. Picked this up immediately!! I've also been writing to Old Sorcery - Realms of Magickal Sorrow. Feels like I am a wizard traveling through time and realms unknown. Very old school. Do give this one a go if you are a big fan of the Burzum prison albums, or something like Mortiis - Crypt of the Wizard. Welcome to our lands Skeleton!! Thangodrim - PrologueThangodrim - Taur-nu-FuinThangodrim - Gil-EstelCertainly has helped keep the apartment lively Essential indeed!! Thangorodrim always delivers with his distinct oldschool take!! Excellent stuff!! skeleton strooong recommendations too indeed mate, thumbs up, indeed what I like from Corvus Neblus is that the samples (dunno if they are from the two Ravenloft SSI DOS games) don't stick out but rather fit into the whole narrative, not feeling intrusive but rather part of them. It's all personal taste ofc but regarding another discussion we had in another thread I think, here they samples totally blend succesfully with the music.. Np something fresh from Spectral Lore : Ontrothon, Saga of the Ancient Glass - Ontrothon, Saga of the Ancient Glassspectrallore.bandcamp.com/album/ontrothon-saga-of-the-ancient-glassJust on the first listen and already enjoying it!! It is sometimes more OST/orchestral, but at other times DS, it's really nicely crafted and I think just from the first playthrough it has a lot to discover!! Recommended listening!!

Excellent stuff!! Sometimes, the old ways are best! I just moved into a new appartment and I felt like something comforting and familiar. I don't think there's a dungeon synth album I'm more familiar with than Taur-nu-Fuin lmao. Currently checking out Syfvr - The Tower. Really enjoying it so far. The snares are like nothing I've heard in dungeon synth before. Really makes you feel like a fresh-faced man-at-arms, hunting a druid through thick wilderness. There's an atmosphere but there's also "movement", which I digging. Welcome skeleton ! Hope you enjoy the forum and your journey through dungeon synth. If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out Depressive Silence. They're good old-fashioned dungeon synth and a pretty good bridge between Burzum and the rest of the genre, at least in my opinion.

Although it's not my kind of sound, I do say Corvus Neblus brilliantly weaves its narrative through audio. Immersive journey definitely enhanced with the DOS samples. If you evoke fond memories of DOS RPGs such as Ravenloft and Pool of Radiance, come give this a listen! Just finished listening to this Spectral Lore release after a busy day. Dips a bit too much into the orchestral and grand for me, but there are some incredible listens here. The Pscyhopomp's Vigil is just oozing a sleepless charm that I'm really about. Searching for secrets on ancient pages. Are they to be found? Welcome skeleton ! Hope you enjoy the forum and your journey through dungeon synth. They're good old-fashioned dungeon synth and a pretty good bridge between Burzum and the rest of the genre, at least in my opinion. Slowly but surely making my way through the dungeon haze; of dark corners and creatures inside. Depressive Silence II is an evocative and ethereal delight. Visions of empty ruined castles; naught but ghost of footsteps and long-forgotten kings. For now, I'll be back in the monastery beside the hearth, with pipe smoke, food, and a curious tape with a funky rhythmic sound. A sound for when there's no real need to be much of anywhere or much of anything, very evocative of a goblin on a dreary evening. One of my absolute favourites thus far on my journey. Ranseur - Goblin Music

I found myself slightly burnt out on Dungeon Synth for a few months but now the cooler weather has me back into the swing of things and so today I have been listening to Age of Spiked Mace by Carnifexian, which is rather good!

Welcome back! I often feel the same. The warmer months are where I transition to "good-times" music, whereas in Autumn I stick with stuff like dungeon synth. It just feels right. Happy Equinox!

Thanks man!
Just finished listening to this for the first time and my initial impression is frustratingly mixed in that a lot of it is VERY good but at times (especially towards the end of the album) I feel like some editing wouldn't go amiss because it feels like certain themes go on for a lot longer than necessary. Still, I may be alone in that thought but I highly recommend others at least check it out:

skeleton, yeah that one's one of mine. First project after doing Caoranach. Have been working on follow up for a while. Maybe half done right now. Glad you liked it! Lots of old casio sounds, but I think DOS/FM synth music heavily seeped into whatever I did during that era.

Minimalistic yet hazy DOS solitude. Many thanks for producing some brilliant DS for my evening listenings. Looking forward to hearing the follow up whenever it's finished cooking!

Scanning through the forum with Ildjarn - Landscapes.
Sometimes, you just need two-hours of untitled synth sounds and a warm mug of tea.
