I'm playing the original Devil May Cry. The ambient music that plays in between fights helps make the atmosphere fantastic. Also the gameplay is phenomenal, especially considering its age.

Just finished the first Baldur's Gate for the umpteenth time. I always forget how short it feels, but it's awesome nonetheless. About to give Siege of Dragonspear a shot for the very first time though so I'm excited. I remember there was a bunch of drama over it when it first released, so part of the fun will be playing and really seeing what everyone was all bent up about.
Has anyone given Vampyr a shot yet? Think that might be my next purchase.

Siege of Dragonspear was amazing, but honestly, i had problems with BGII, it was too large and massive for me. I was kind-of suprised that it is considered the peak quality of the game. I'd like to give it another shot when i have the time and paitence.

I played the original version of BG1 and it was a HUGE leap at the time, but for me and as you said a lot others, is at Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhaal .. It's really art, not just a game.. I haven't played the reworked Enhanced editions but today they are I think the versions to go.. Make yourself a favor mate and go through all of BG2 + expansion and I think even the ending credits will reward you.. Truly an experience... My ranking of Infinity Engine games would be 1. Planescape : Torment - This is pure art and an ultimate gaming experience.. Timeless classic, happy to say after 40 years that I was there, just like other irrelevant stuff like listening to Iron Maiden as a little boy in the 80s.. 2. Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhaal : This is also FLAWLESS imho and as great as Planescape, just right next to it... Masterpiece again.. 3. Icewind Dale 2 : Great fights, more tight and tidy, dungeon puzzles too, really the best game to play in winter .. 4. Baldur's Gate 1 + original expansion : IEngine was at its start so it feel very very rough, still it's a great game , pioneer and I think it's a great thing the E.E. came out with some added stuff.. Still it's the start of the journey which peaks at BG2. 5. Icewind Dale 1 : The only of the above which I haven't finished, it felt good but some game breaking bugs ruined it for me back then.. This I think also has an Enhanced Edition so I might return to it someday!
There's also I think Temple of Elemental evil but even I own a boxed copy I never got to play it then or now..

Think that might be my next purchase. I haven't checked in on Vampyr since like the first teaser trailer that showed no actual gameplay. I remember loving the idea of the game, so I really hope it was executed well. I was super excited when I heard a World of Darkness game was in the making, but I'm fairly certain that's fallen through so I hope Vampyr can take the place of the excitement I originally had, but for some reason I expect to be a bit disappointed. Same deal with The Order 1886. It wasn't a bad game (albeit short), but I was hoping for something else, maybe with a little more camp.

Ah, i love this oldschool genre of games, You're right, it really is more then a game, it is master art. I also havn't finished Icewind dale 1, i actually really disliked the plot and lost my patience with it. As i said BG 1 was amazing, and i'm sure that BG 2 is even better if you have the time and patience. I sure WILL play it! Planescape Torment is an awsome game (or perhaps, a piece of literature???) - my problem with that is dialouge based - which is the best actually, but it can be a pain for someone who is not a native english speaker. This is the reason i lost patience and droped it. But not long ago i bought the Enhanced Edition, so it is on my list again! I have also played Pillars of Eternity, which is not as good as the games you mentioned, but still very good (and just a glimpse of the enjoyment of BG). This game actually introduced me to this genre. But indeed the oldschool games are far better, i did not enjoy at all at Tyranny.

Did you try Pillars of Eternity 2 ? I didn't like the 1, but its sequel is pretty cool with its alternation of "Baldur's Gate"-like maps, travel by sea (discovering new islands, encountering other ships, and so on) and "choose your own adventure"-like screens.

I'm currently playing : - Mount and Blade Wardband with the "Floris mod - independent towns" which has tons of cool features (buying boats, acres of land, diplomacy, more options in battle, and so on) - Pathologic : a very gloomy and disturbing russian RPG where you can play 3 different characters (with 3 different mainquests and sidequests) in a small steppe town hit by a plague

Nah pillars of eternity 1 was enough, i'm not interested in it's sequel. Would prefer playing an oldschool RPG. Nice choice by the way with Mount and Blade: Warband! A sweet fun game.

I tried last year to start Pillars of Eternity and Torment Tides of Numenera, but unfortunately dropped them both since I felt I needed to be more dedicated to them.. I liked the opening of Tides of Numenera more, I enjoy (adventure games style) long dialogues.. Again, I uninstalled them to play at a proper time which always is "in the future with less real life ditractions going on".. Pathologic I remember it from the original version in the previous decade, played a demo back then but I don't know if I could stomach something like that currently, also the survival elements make it harder even.. I remember Mount and Blade being mentioned in RPGWatch for many years now, never got to even check it out I'm afraid! I still haven't fired up again the very very enjoyable LEgend of Grimrock but I hope I'll get back to it, currently thinking of just installing an oldschool adventure or puzzle-adventure to have a game with slow pace..

Those screenshots sure look nice, I love that aesthetic of early 2000's attempt at realistic 3d graphics. I'm going to add it to my Steam wishlist.

I've really wanted to play Pathologic for the longest time, but I've heard it's a pretty big time investment and a somewhat difficult game so I've just never gotten around to it given all my other obligations. I haven't really sat down and played a video game in close to 5 months. Pathologic looks great though. There's a classic and an HD version, both you can get on GOG for $13. I only buy stuff on sale from GOG so I paid like $3 or $4 for it, probably worth the full price though. It was just on sale again last week, actually.

I have Pathologic and tried to dive in, but felt like I was too busy to properly enjoy it. Seriously looks great though. Awesome atmosphere. Most criticism I noticed was over its clunky combat system. Honestly the combat has to be hilariously bad for me to care. With games like this I just need the main characters and story to be solid. I'll be getting it this weekend though so I'll let you dudes know my first impressions. I'd kill for another proper WoD game but I'm not counting on that happening haha. Redemption and Bloodlines are some of my top games and I still go back to them every now and then.

I played through Bloodlines once and loved it. And I played as Nosferatu, so I feel like I missed a ton of dialog and will have a very different experience if I go back and replay it. Really felt like the choices had significance. I played tabletop World of Darkness for a handful of sessions a long time ago. It was pretty cool, but the gamemaster did very little preparation and seemed to entirely be entirely improvising so I don't know how much I got the proper experience. But it did seem like a very open-ended system, so maybe that's par for the course.
