Yeah mate, the category is full of gems in general. I started with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom 1 and 2 era with all the wads n stuff was a great era. From the late 90s/early 00s Blood 2 was a great game I enjoyed immensely with a great atmosphere. I never liked the Half Life clones with endless crawbars, crawling in pipes and crates things though. In the Quake vs Unreal Tournament I was into UT .. These are the games I enjoyed mostly in the category.
Oh and original Halo on xbox where in one screen you could play 4 player split, together with the new then introduced vehicles n stuff was a great experience too.. I will probably remember a lot later.
On the RPG front, many people love and enjoy Gothic series, unfortunately I didn't play it back then and since I'm kinda OCD on playing a series in order I started with Gothic I which these days seems kinda rough in the edges and never really advance in the game, which is a shame I know .. I hope one day I will get back to it or a remaster maybe shows up so I can boot the whole series..

I enjoy Half Life a lot. I played a lot of Doom ports growing up though which made me love the genre. Painkiller is a classic in the genre if you haven't played that yet. I'm more of a UT fan as well.
I haven't been able to commit time to an RPG as of late due to studying at university unfortunately. I played a lot of Dark Souls 3 when it released but there are still a few things I need to do in it.

MAte honestly when I was writing the post I was thinking of "what was the name of that horror rpg that I enjoyed but never finished" and indeed it was Painkiller!! Nice, great find!! I played it when it was released and enjoyed it, I still remember some set pieces of it but never got finished as I was stuck in a level with a bridge where I had defeated all enemies and probably a game trigger didn't turn and was stuck with nothingto do .. A shame, always want to get back to it, as well as check the rest of the series.
One that I did finish but was like more of a rambo pizza movie to play for fun was the first Far Cry. Good graphics for its age but it was as unmemorable as it gets even though I enjoyed the exotic scenery.. And I tried to play Cryostasis at some point but dropped it quickly for unknown reasons.
Bioshock 1 (I also didn't finish it) was really good too. I plan to get back to the whole series sometime too (so many things to do, so little time)
If you can't find time btw for a proper story/exploration RPG check out the Action RPG genre which maybe is best for quick doses of mindless RPG fun, I'm sure in this thread we have talked about them but you can never go wrong with Diablo 1/2/3(online only this one) as well as Torchlight 1,2 and Titan Quest . Enjoyed all of these and finished them (Diablos many times). [and maybe Grim Dawn but I dropped it on Chapter 1 due to bug in the prerelease version since I backed it on kickstarter]..

I believe Painkiller goes for sale often on GOG. The steam versions are a bit wonky on modern systems.
I never played the first Far Cry. I have played the first Crysis though and that was interesting for the technical achievements it made for the time.
In my opinion the Bioshock series starts to get worse after the first one. The second is too easy and Infinite takes many steps back from being an "immersive sim" as those games get bundled in with that genre.
I really enjoy ARPGs in my free time. I liked Titan Quest a lot, but the build I initially went with wasn't as exciting as I hoped.

Evil Within 2. I had kind of ignored it based off the first game (which wasn't great, a bit rough and had very similar weapon combat to The Last of Us), which was an error. This is the closest resemblance i've had to what I used to feel when playing the Silent Hill games (minus the crap combat of the series, which isn't what I played those games for) since the fourth installment of that series (as the last 3 were bunk) and I really like it. It feels good to play and I have very few complaints so far.

As previously stated, I played, enjoyed and beat Dark Souls 3 so over the last few days I decided to test my luck. Played the remaster of Dark Souls 2 for about 2 hours and wanted to bite my hand off, so that got put back on the shelf. Made it to the first boss of Bloodborne and found nothing but an uphill battle I couldn't overcome (it would seem i'm severely out of practice with the style). So now i'm playing Final Fantasy XV and trying to knock off the final 6 achievements for Fallout 3.

I'm in very much the same boat. I tried to play through all 3 Dark Souls and Bloodborne recently. Dark Souls 1 and 3 were no problem, 2 was frustrating and just not very fun or interesting. It was much uglier than the others, but not in a good way. I felt the same way about Bloodborne - just too fucking hard. I couldn't even get past the first area with all the townsfolk. Died twice in a row and ragequit.

I've never played DS1, but maybe i'll give it a shot when the remaster comes out on the PS4.
Not really related, but I saw this earlier and it seemed like something i'd be into. Comes out in June.

The remaster definitely looks interesting. I'll be checking it out once it comes out.
For those of you who play the Souls series, what types of characters do you like to play? Generally, in most games I prefer to make as tanky a character as possible. My characters are typically heavily-armored strong guys with two handed swords or one-handed sword and shield. However, in my most recent playthroughs I decided to go a different route. My Dark Souls 1 character was a dexterity-based faith build who wielded katanas, and my Dark Souls 3 build was a pyromancer. I had a much harder time with both of these. Bloodborne of course only allows for what would be considered a light assassin-type build, which is part of why playing that game feels like beating my head against a wall.

For those of you who play the Souls series, what types of characters do you like to play? I almost always go with a high dexterity build that uses longer ranged melee weapons. I beat DS1 with a high dexterity build and an emphasis on regaining stamina, wearing light armor and using the halberd. I finished DS3 with a high dexterity build and the chaos blade (which is really good if you equip rings to deal with the hp loss). I never beat DS2 but I tried dual wielding in that one, hardly got to play Bloodborne since I don't have a PS4, and it's been far too long since I played Demon's Souls to remember my build for that game.

detoxscission, Bloodborne was a rough start but once you pass the first boss you really get a good flow going. Keep it up! I really want Vampyr to be good, but I'm a bit worried it'll be underwhelming and more of a visual thing. dungeonsnake, I'm always a rogueish character in pretty much everything I play. Curved swords, rapiers, bows, etc in DS. Not super big on magic. Since Bloodborne is freshest in memory, I mained with the cane, blades of mercy, and tonitrus if it suited me. Stuck with the blunderbuss for my firearm. I'm not real big on maxing bloodtinge. Armor is usually varied between bone ash, ashen, and harrowed, but it really depends where I am.

There is a game, Blasmephous, which went through a great kikstarter campaign a year ago. Is not still out, but the developers have released 3 prototypes by now (last one yesterday). Ambientation is dark and grim, based on an fantasy middle-age wold dominated by sick christian-like religion full of Spanish inquisition's references. Pretty bloody and macabre, with some great graphics and designs. Is working as an inspiration to the song I'm working on right now. Take a look on the kikstarter trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyskUorhhegTheir instagram account is also full of interesting concept art pieces: www.instagram.com/blasphemousgame

That looks seriously cool. Reminds me of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, another great game i played through recently.

Well, not *currently* playing but on a 2 week hiatus, BUT enjoying it as it unfolds, The Legend of Grimrock 1 (on level 2 now)... It was on my play list for quite some time, certainly it delivered what it promises, modern oldshool dungeon crawling in the veins of legendary Eye of the Beholder... And add to that that it's the PERFECT game to enjoy your current Dungeon Synth playlist.. Perfect atmosphere..
