I've only listened to that once so I don't remember it very well, but skimming through it sounds like it's quite varied, mostly without vocals, and when it's harsh it's only every now and then, which is fine by me, adds a cool atmosphere. But when harsh vocals dominate the whole song, especially with shitty lyrics, as in the case of Shadowcaster, I find it definitely ruins the experience. That's why I have a hard time appreciating Cernunnos Woods as well. I was actually just about to post about Cernunnos Woods! I love those vocals, personally. I feel like they kind of guide you through the music in a way. Something I think would be cool would be to have vocals kind of like Dagon from Inquisition. I feel that could be super hypnotic. Take this for instance: m.youtube.com/watch?v=bTJRWiysX38I feel that could translate to DS quite well Dude, I was just yesterday drinking beer with a friend while blasting some Inquisition, and I swear I just thought about that very thing! I actually thought about maybe adding a few ritual-like vocal lines on some future Vagor work.

I find them hypnotic if I am prepared to listen to the entire cassette, but they really bother me in small doses. I was more referring to Shadowcaster about the lyrics, I don't remember liking or disliking the CW lyrics, but just the style and amount of vocals bothered me. And just the music too is a little too airy-fairy for my liking. A lot of the time it sounds like he started recording with no real plan of what he was going to play. Awaken the Empire of Dark Wood is not bad though.

The DS Archives YT channel uploaded an album by one Valar called Magic and Wyrmfire the other day that features BM vocals that I recommend.
Also, speaking of vocals, and not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I was really impressed with Hedge Wizard's spoken word approach on Local Portal.

I'd like to see more stuff with screaming, but I'm really not a fan of whispered vocals at all. Croaked vocals like inquisition could be pretty cool if done right. Haven't heard any inquisition- any recommendations? when I hear the term croaked vox, immediately I think of Cornelius' "harsh" vox in the Solefald album In Harmonia Universali, which I recall were very controversial when that album was released, as he had used some excellent but very standard BM screams in earlier Solefald albums. The vox are very evocative, a kind of existential harshness rather than a raw scream. Β You're good with anything by inquisition really, but most start with Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult. I also love the vocals from demilich, it doesn't get croakier than that.

I might experiment with it in small doses at first and then if it seems to work then I'll maybe do it more. What is likely to happen is that I'll try it and hate it and never do it again haha but I do want to give it a shot I unintentionally made that sound like I'm getting into some new drug oops

ohh I totally forgot about this release: not true DS - definitely some metal elements (but no drums) and some prominent orchestral stabs and acoustic instruments in the mix. I really enjoyed this release! grylle.bandcamp.com/album/monstres-et-merveilles

Honestly, I don't like it. An occasional harsh mumbling or distant shriek is fine, but if it's permeating it can really ruin the music for me. Edit: Here's an example where I think it does work though. It helps being low in the mix. Do you have a download link for this!!!! -MOYOGASH

I had a bit of low croaking at times on my latest demo Forest of Sempiternal Night. Check it out if you haven't!
