Hello, all!
Recently, I have really been enjoying Dungeon Synth that employs Black Metal vocals - preferably, with no other black metal influence (no guitars or anything like that).
What do you guys think of the use of Black Metal-style vocals in Dungeon Synth? What feelings do these vocals evoke for you? Do they add to the experience? Do they detract? Personally, I find they add a whole other depth and aesthetic to the music - not necessarily worse or better, but different.
Also, I'm always looking for more stuff like this, so post your examples that you know of please! I'll post some of my favorites as well.

A Feast for Famished Ravens is quite controversial evidently. I must say I love it, and other work that incorporates black metal vocals. This album in particular is just really standout on my mind as being very unique and just honest sounding. Very expressive. I hope to reach this level of infamy some day, haha! Albeit perhaps in a different way

Honestly, I don't like it. An occasional harsh mumbling or distant shriek is fine, but if it's permeating it can really ruin the music for me.
Edit: Here's an example where I think it does work though. It helps being low in the mix.

To me it really enhances the atmosphere so I enjoy it. But I guess if it's poorly performed or mixed then it could be distracting

I've only listened to that once so I don't remember it very well, but skimming through it sounds like it's quite varied, mostly without vocals, and when it's harsh it's only every now and then, which is fine by me, adds a cool atmosphere. But when harsh vocals dominate the whole song, especially with shitty lyrics, as in the case of Shadowcaster, I find it definitely ruins the experience. That's why I have a hard time appreciating Cernunnos Woods as well.

I feel like they kind of guide you through the music in a way. Something I think would be cool would be to have vocals kind of like Dagon from Inquisition. I feel that could be super hypnotic. Take this for instance: m.youtube.com/watch?v=bTJRWiysX38I feel that could translate to DS quite well

I'd like to see more stuff with screaming, but I'm really not a fan of whispered vocals at all. Croaked vocals like inquisition could be pretty cool if done right.

I'm loving this. I always enjoy Dungeon Synth that sounds essentially like ambient Black Metal. Thanks for sharing!

Voices of Wind sounds really good, and I enjoy the vocal mix. When it sounds too much like crappy old school black metal, I find it a bit strange (even if I enjoy black metal by itself, of course). I like Nirnaeth. The cover rather evoke some "out of the dungeon" music, and there are not much Synth beside the piano, but it has a nice "inner world" touch and the black metal screams, in Polish, are very enjoyable: I've presented this album because it's the only one I know. The other one sounds great (and with more synth): www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG7jmMliUxIElend is not typically Dungeon Synth as well, but there are nice female and harsh vocals, it's more like classical music, but there are definitely some elements which could be heard as DS: This one is more DS (first album): www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbg-YJYNy8MDamn, I hadn't listened to it for almost 15 years, it's so good... Wow, I've never listened to this Elend album. Very DS in spirit, but quite intense as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXl-kTbtmFUOh, and don't forget Wojnar for the greatest DS (very DS in sound, but the settings are again "outside the dungeon") with harsh vocals:

I don't know what it is about old school black metal vocals in Dungeon Synth that I like, but I just really do. It gives it a wholly different aesthetic, I must admit, but it's one that I enjoy, nonetheless. Either way, can't wait to check these out and thanks again!

I find them hypnotic if I am prepared to listen to the entire cassette, but they really bother me in small doses.

Haven't heard any inquisition- any recommendations? when I hear the term croaked vox, immediately I think of Cornelius' "harsh" vox in the Solefald album In Harmonia Universali, which I recall were very controversial when that album was released, as he had used some excellent but very standard BM screams in earlier Solefald albums. The vox are very evocative, a kind of existential harshness rather than a raw scream.
