That's me! Are you in the facebook group, Alder ? I am, although I never post/comment. I'm a bit hesitant to connect my real self with my music publicly, but anyone who wants to connect over fb should PM me here.

Thank you for the review! This is real encouragement to continue to push myself for subsequent recordings. Mouth of the Deep Into the Crevasse Encompassing Darkness - This one and the last two I think could've been like part I, II, and III within a larger track. They have some of their own things going on, but I see them more as phases of a something singular. The first three tracks are definitely progressive stages covering the same theme - slowly entering the Deep with resolute determination despite the dread of the situation. Originally they were labelled as "pt. I, II, & III" - and I've been sort of second-guessing my decision to drop that since I uploaded...is editing their names now tacky? Overall, dividing the tracks was the greatest struggle for me as I recorded all 44 minutes in one continuous session. If anyone would rather listen to the album as the single track it was born as: it's here. The Fear - Odd track. Something of an interlude track in my eyes that starts to form the pulse of the next track and those ahead. Is this supposed to be a bit like a rushed scared pulse? I could see that but it didn't seem too fearful to me. This track is the "turning point," both musically/thematically, but also technically - the way I work with noise is by collecting it into a sort-of delay loop and modifying as needed. Purging the loop for a new build is always a challenge and I try to use it to capture significant emotional shifts. There's a special fear I've only ever felt underground where the chest constricts, adrenaline spikes, the bottom drops from your stomach, and your vision shrinks...but your heart remains steady, plodding. This track represents the point at which the delver is fully aware there's no going back and tries to swallow this fear. I actually made this recording less than 24 hours after I'd gone on an exceptionally deep caving run. After pushing through a bit of a tight squeeze (I'm definitely not svelte) my buddy and I came into this rugged, downward sloping chamber, far at the bottom of which was this darkest darkness, ominous, and perfectly smooth lake. With lights out one could see, somewhere in its murky depths, a faint diffuse glow, hard to look at directly. The unnerve was...inspiring. Faltering Torchlight - This really does feel like you're being eerily guided by what little light you have. There's something about the mixing that creates like an emotional reverb, resonating against the broke noise pulse and the wandering synth. Love this track. A Faint Glow Ahead - The beginning of this sounds like the burn of the mysterious glow. First track that's somewhat hopeful, that dread may not be the only thing below. The simpler minimal keys lessen that dread a bit, the lack of minor key shifts that give much of the previous its eeriness. Memories of the Distant Surface - The noise plummets downward in key and it feels like it shouldn't, not in the musical sense, but in the "I'm not out of here yet" sense. Something about this reminds me of the end of Doom games where you learn that despite all your efforts wading through hell, you're only going to be facing more. It leaves a feeling of it not being over, which I think is fitting as this is only Chapter 1. The lighter keys at the back of things in the 3-4 minute span reminded me of the creepier Pokemon gen 1 and 2 GB tracks. This is why I adore music so deeply. I recorded these sounds almost as a diary entry to myself, and yet people who've never met me can listen & hear practically the same landscapes and emotional experiences! I love that you brought up Pokemon, too - while not a conscious influence here, possibly my very earliest memory of "branching out" in music was sitting in the back of the car at night, 8 or 9 years old, with headphones in my gameboy color just listening to the music from Pokemon blue (or Link's Awakening) - I loved the cave tracks & Lavender Town the most for sure. P.S. The Keeper - you have my favorite avatar on this board.

I've only listened to some parts, but I love the sound and the compositions. Great release! I like how it's noisy but not too random, and how old it sounds.

I've been hyping this album up a bit and people are really responding positively! Even people who aren't big Dungeon Synth fans are really vibing with it. You've got something special here

Alder - I have to say, I waited a long time to listen to your album, and I absolutely regret it. This is easily one of the best DS releases this year, and one of my favorite releases of any genre. You've really blown me away in every aspect with this release, so thank you! It's honestly such a thrill to get to listen to something as good as this. I love how the genre is producing so much great content lately!

Helped me realize how expansive the genre(s?) is/are. Which reminds me - I should probably go listen to Margery Kempe as soon as I can! (P.S. - good progress is being made both toward an Alder Deep tape self-release & chapter 2.)

Very expansive. Like, too expansive to really nail down anything specific to mention. I will have to admit I've yet to manage a full play-through in a single, continuous setting. The really long, trudging build-up in Jerusalem stuck with me. I have absolutely no experience with any of the source materials of your work, but I'm thinking it might be the time to grab an annotated copy of Chaucer's tales or BoMK and try it out with your stuff supporting the mood...

Thanks so much, man! That means a lot, and I'm glad you like it! It's not quite as lengthy to sit through as The Canterbury Tales, but it's a big one, for sure. I, of course, highly recommend reading the literature! The Book of Margery Kempe is a shorter read than the Canterbury Tales, but you can't go wrong with either.
