Hello dungeoneers!
What do you think of Power Metal? Some could say that it's very far from Dungeon Synth and Black Metal, but it's very Fantasy stuff too. And Epic Black Metal style sometimes gets close to it, especially Bal-Sagoth.

Rhapsody was the band that blended me into metal. So you can say that without this band i would never know of Dungeon Synth I used to listen to quite a lot of power metal back at the old days when i was a teenager. Natureally, my taste in music has changed and i do not listen to it much, but no doubt it's amazing music. I wanted to post my favorate, but you already did! The best song from the best band, as if you were reading my mind! "Follow the blind" by Blind Guardian is my current Power Metal favorate (which is kind of thrash metal?). I saw them live two weeks ago, it was an amazing concert.

I don't know too much about the later stuff honestly. But I'm a big fan of the early US power metal bands, omen, manowar, cirith ungol, manila road, helstar, attacker.

I've never considered Manowar power metal, even though thematically they fit. I've always considered them just pure heavy metal.
Power metal is one of the few genres of metal I just can't get into, never could. The one exception is Sonata Arctica's debut album, somehow that over-the-top generic style packed full of all the clichés of power metal works for me on that album. Everything else they've done does nothing to me.

Some power metal is okay. Newer stuff doesn't click with me at all. I'm probably just really selective with it, even with older stuff. I couldn't get into Blind Guardian, also didn't like a lot of Helloween's stuff but I really like their first album. ranseur , I think a lot of those I'd classify as 'epic metal' rather than 'power metal', but maybe that's because I always think of theatrical cheesiness with a lot of power metal which is probably informed by the newer stuff, like the super harmonized solos and driving 16th chords bulk of the verses, tons of goofy orchestral synth. Gloryhammer is a new one I really don't like. I like all those bands you listed though.

To me that's the real power metal but I just didn't grow up into the glossier stuff. Maybe I should give it another try though.

Without getting into which is power metal or epic heavy etc etc , my thoughts on the genre I grew up with and due to RPGs and relevant literature and Conan comics I'm very tied to : - Manowar are beyond great up and until Triumph of Steel .. All albums up until that are a must listen and contain endless Battle Hymns - Helloween are also a huge great band of that great era, while pure Power Metal they didn't have MANY epic themes if I recall, just some great epic cover art , but still all should listen to the Keepers 1 & 2 and probably Walls and the first demo/album.. - Blind Guardian have released some great stuff but a looooot of mediocre ones too.. I urge anyone to listen to Somewhere Far Beyond, its timeless epic.. After that of course Imaginations is the other essential.. - Manilla Road's Crystal Logic and Open the Gates are pure gold too... endless hymns and as epic as it can get.. - Omen are another obvious choice, Battle Cry a must, also Warning of Danger and The Curse are must listen stuff in the same epic atmosphere.. On Power Metal without being epic neceserily-always : - Gamma Ray's one and only GREAT but, REALLY great album Land of the Free is a diamond.. - Crimson Glory's Transcendence, I'm not sure if it falls in Power or Progressive - Power, but it is awesome beyond words and with some epic atmosphere too in some songs.. - Running Wild are the (pirate) conquerors of the high seas, ENDLESS RESPECT for many great albums, but Pile of Skulls, Port Royal, Blazon Stone and Under Jolly Roger will eternally grant pleasure to our ears.. - Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King is another must and timeless metal vinyl, with lots of epic vibes too.. (Gutter Ballet I guess is mostly progressive so it's excluded from the convo besides being equally great).. I guess most will know all of the above but in case someone hasn't yet searched through this branch I guess its a good lead

Power Metal has something in common with DS, that Black Metal don't. It's naivety and pure escapism. BM often wants to be evil, while DS and Power Metal are just fantasy.

I'm excited about this stuff with some up coming shows in my area, sacred oath and then manilla road.

I rarely listen to Power Metal, anymore, but Stratovarius will always have a place in my heart as my all-time favorite of the genre. Albums like Twilight Time, Visions, Elements, and Destiny are just incredible to me.
That being said, there are PM bands that I enjoy and return to every now and then, albeit rarely. Gamma Ray, as before mentioned, are awesome. Same with Blind Guardian ("And Then There Was Silence" is easily in my top 10 Metal songs in general), and some Edguy as well.

Blind Guardian is about it for me in terms of a real affinity with the genre. I like Power Metal elements, like Proscriptor's Clean vox in Absu, or sometimes the really high tenor vox. but there's often so much about the songwriting that just never clicked for me really before or since hearing Nightfall in Middle Earth, a bloated album to be sure but chock full of just incredible hooks - I thinkif you're gonna have extensive clean vox, you might as well have some singalong choruses, and Blind Guardian usually remembers that.

Fuck me up with those 80's US Power Metal bands like Manilla Road, Omen, Liege Lord, Crimson Glory, Fates Warning, and Helstar. They had a certain atmosphere that I couldn't find in the European scene. Behold!

they had a certain atmosphere that I couldn't find in the European scene. agree! that's way I collected U.S. Metal records many years ago. First two albums by Crimson Glory are absolute masterpieces and, let me tell you this, even better than Queensryche to me.
