By the way, is there any levelling system in place for longer games? It seems unfair and unrealistic that after tons of experience in battle, a character should still be just as weak as he was in the beginning. I'm specifically talking about increasing health, but combat skill and initiative are also things that I think should upgrade over time.

I really like this system. The random generation is cool. So here my 1st try, 100% randomly generated character:
Jurlis Ek is just an average elf looking to make it through some difficult times and some foolhardy ambition. He's brave, perhaps a little absent-minded, and curious to a fault. However he has trained in the arts of adventuring, and knows he must be cautious if he is to be successful in unearthing the secrets of the dark and ancient depths.

www.d20swsrd.com/ is your friend! Head over to it, go to your character class, and check out their advancement table, or just download the books, most OGL books are free (including S&W), they only cost money if you want print versions. (Which I did spring for with both S&W and Labyrinth Lord, recommended if you'll be playing in real life.) EDIT: Speaking of leveling, it's worth noting that in an OSR game, like this one, experience is also gained for treasure accumulated. Don't feel like you have to kill monsters for the sole purpose of leveling up, if you can sneak past and grab the goods, do it.

Hmmm...looks like we don't have any clerics! That might be interesting. If I hadn't already rolled a thief I would roll a cleric, but, alas. A thief is also super important too for picking locks, checking traps, etc. We might be able to hire one on, or we could rely on potions.

How many people can join this game? I hope I can still join if I am not too late. If I am not, I'm planning on creating a character tomorrow. Otherwise I am going to lurk and read your adventures.

I think 2-8 is the suggested player limit but these old games sometimes had 12 people so come on in. I am going to post some info tonight!

I have a few rules and mechanics questions. I've played primarily pathfinder and 5e so old school is new to me. I did first learn on advanced D&D but that was forever ago and only a handful of sessions.
There seems to be a few differences between the random generated details and what was in the rule book that Kap provided.
1: I have a 13 strength so shouldn't I recieve a 5% exp bonus as a fighter? Also +1 to melee attack, should I list that here?
2: I receive bonus languages due to my high Int. I'm used to this rule but I'm unsure what to choose for this style of play.
3: I have a long sword but it is listed here as 1d6 whereas the rule book lists it as 1d8. Am I supposed to have a long sword or a short sword (1d6)? I'd prefer a long sword as that is what the random generator gave me but with a different damage die.
4: Why do I have a -1 to short bow damage? The rules stated that arrows deal 1d6 and that short bows don't determine the damage, arrows do.

^ Hey! I believe Kaptain's probably still asleep and will be for another few hours, so I'll answer and if there are any ways that you'd like to correct me, Kaptain, please feel free.
As an overview, that random character generator is using Swords & Wizardry Whitebox, while I believe the game in general is using the "Core" book. There may be (there are) differences between Core and Whitebox, so that is most likely the cause of the discrepancies. Going by Core rules for the answer:
1.) Yes, you should get the experience bonus and yes, according to the Strength table in the Core rules, you should be receiving from your Strength: a.) +1 to hit, no bonus to damage b.) A roll of 1-2 on a D6 to force doors. c.) A +10 to your carrying capacity.
2.) Well, as a dwarf I believe you can already understand common speech and the speech used by goblinoids, kobolds, gnomes, etc. I kind of think that anything that would be reasonably plausible with your character's background would work, but probably run that one by Kaptain. Our party seems to have a lot of elves in it, I'd probably pick elvish so I can eavesdrop on them, but I'm an ass like that.
3.) According to Core rules, a longsword should be 1d8. This is because the generator is using Whitebox, I'd say go ahead and make that change, but again, defer to Kaptain.
4.) This is due again to the fact that this is a Whitebox character generator. In Whitebox rules, missile weapons are directly given damage, and the shortbow's damage is 1d6-1. Since this play by post is using Core rules, you're correct, you should not have that -1 to short bow damage.

Sorry for the double post, but as an amendment, remember you are free to roll up your characters yourself and not rely on the character generator. The process is detailed in the Core book PDF which is free for download (I believe linked earlier in this thread) and you can have a bit more "customization" with your character if you do it yourself in terms of buying weapons, equipment, etc.

I actually did not realizer there was that much difference between the Whitebox and core rules as I thought the character generator would be an easy go to for frequent death. Thanks Verminaard for hashing through some of these questions, Ill be aware of the differences. Wow, so reading through these differences, it isn't much but Core gives weapons a lot more punch. The two handed sword in Whitebox was a 1D6+1 where as in Core it is 1d10. That is a lot of power. I have all of your character sheets in a separate document and I made the changes. While the random character generator is easy, actually making your character gives you a little bit more customization. Sonofblashyrkh, the random character generator gave you a score of Intelligence 18 as a dwarf fighter. As a magic user, you can know 6 additional languages and basically learn all of the spells. I do not think there is any rules for sipping into other classes but if you wanted to list some more languages (elvish, giant, kobold, whatever) we will roll with it. I am also noting your classes and high scores for purposes of experience points. If anyone has a high wisdom/Charisma, you get bonuses for experience. If you are a fighter with a high stregth score or a theif with a high dex score you also get bonuses to experience. With all of that said, can we just appreciate the random god like character of Dockzer the Shadowy. Christ on a cracker that is a lot of damage with a big buff for this system. I am just saying, you all might have a chance at this. Just joking, there is a dragon in the second room.
