Hello there, dungeon folks! I'm glad to be here, great forum. It's also nice that we can discuss different metal genres. I'd like to ask you about the first wave of BM. You know, Bathory, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, early Sodom, Sarcófago, Tormentor and others. And if you don't, some useful links are attached. Well, what's your opinion, is it "real" black metal or just "dark/raw thrash"? Are there any contemporary bands playing in that vein? I've met people who thought that BM was born in Norway, even Mr. Crispy Cornflakes (cool name for V. V-nes) thinks so. They were mostly Russians, so maybe European and American metalheads have different views on this topic. First Wave of Black Metal Timeline and bands

Great to have you here, Eugene!
I'm personally not interested in first wave stuff at all. There are two exceptions to this, Bathory of course, and Pentagram (from Chile). Pentagram's demos are the rawest music I've ever heard.

As a sort of public service announcement, even if you're like me and think thrashy stuff is kind of uninteresting, it's still important to know your history. Fenriz seems to break it down pretty accessibly here:

Bathory stays one of the best for me, together with early Venom and Pentagram as well. I think it is more interesting than most metal genres in the 80s tbh.

When I first got into BM, I hated this style, with the exception of Bathory. Then, through a connection with Mirai Kawashima of Sigh, I discovered some more of the first-wave sound, and learned to appreciate it. There is always something special about hearing a genre in its infancy, before the sound becomes homogenous - in the videos you posted, there is a larger range of vocal styles and guitar tones than there are in most black metal records released today - true, somebody may have ruined their vocal chords in discovering this sound, but it is great to hear the variety.
Maybe some of the examples are more thrash or heavy metal that is just done in a raw style, but all that is subjective to me. A lot of the playing sounds to me like it has a punk influence, and I think that's a great energy that a lot of modern metal lacks.
Of Course, I love the developments brought on by Second Wave black metal, and how the sound evolved from there, but I think it is silly to pretend that Darkthrone and Mayhem just arrived at this sound because Norway has dark winters.

For our purposes as DS artists and fans, I think the interesting question is which bands in this style started using keyboards first? Eugene, do you know? In one of your videos, there's a clip from Bulldozer that features a heavy synth part, but I'm not sure chronologically who was the first to use this?
I find nowadays that I don't really like most of is identified as symphonic black metal, but for me the early use of keyboards (even with just simple drones) is crucial to cementing the identity of black metal.

It's hard to say who was the first but Mortuary Drape had a long organ-ish intro on their 1987 demo "Necromancy" Another interesting example is an intro by Swedish death metal band Sorcery. It's from their 1989 demo "Unholy Crusade" and it sounds really close to DS that we all know and love.

Didn't know about any of those, I am sure I'm going to listen to those soon. The intro to this Catacomb EP is also similar to some DS.
