Some wiiiiild sounds in this one, love seeing the final product of such a heady concept. This is a cool project and I’m looking forward to checking out the ones I missed. Hey, thanks for checking it out!
A few more notes about this latest experience:
Wow this was hard! And I failed! I created not one but two 6 track EPs that are part of a "2 disc" set. The second half should be finished mixing and released in the next few days. Also, the first disc is a little over 16 minutes, I just couldn't cut it all the way down to size. But hey, we're here to have fun.
This project was difficult to conceptualize and I learned a ton, in both composition and mixing/mastering stages.
Thanks to The Ashen Knight for participating as well.
The Autumnal Equinox Rush is set to begin Sep 22, and will feature a "return to our roots" of sorts, with a strong dungeon-based theme and some simplified rules. Mark your calendars!

It's almost time again! Autumnal/Southward Equinox is approaching and so, bathed by the fulsome light of Diana, we have rolled the dice to determine the parameters for this special dungeon rush: Enter the DungeonOur theme is literally being in a dungeon! Choose your favourite of the following dungeon generators and make an album based on being trapped inside. Watabou One-Page Dungeon Generator watabou.itch.io/one-page-dungeonDonjon Fantasy Dungeon Generator (set details to basic)
Customize the parameters to your liking. If you have another dungeon generator you want to use, feel free. IMPORTANT: Save an image of your dungeon and incorporate it in your album art. We have a new special rule for this Rush: EncumbranceThe dungeon is dark and dangerous, and we don't have much room to carry a lot of synthesizer equipment. You may use a maximum of six instrument patches for your album - they must be the same throughout all tracks! (A drum kit can be considered 1 patch). Other parameters: 14 days (Sep 22 - Oct 6) Songs (2d4 + 1) = 6 Album Length (8d6, rolled twice for min and max) = 28 to 31 min Roll proofs here: imgur.com/a/46DYzSUThe Southward Equinox Rush begins Sep 22 at midnight. For those daring enough to venture into dungeons of your own making, you are welcome to begin the process of choosing your six instrument patches now!

Couple things I forgot to mention: 1. As usual, you have 14 days to compose your project, but after that you have infinite time to mix etc. 2. Effects don't count as patches - use as many as you like. (Try to stick to the spirit of the restrictions when it comes to distorting your sounds so much that they become unrecognizable, though.)

This looks like a fun thing to try.
I can't say I've ever done Dungeon Synth by definition. However, I've been making dark ambient sketches since the mid 90's with an SC-55 and an M1 and I did play D&D. Maybe if I had incorporated a fantasy theme and artwork I could have been a proto-DS pioneer! 😆
One caveat: What's the take on non-synth instruments? Bass guitar is my primary instrument and foundation for much of my music. Would it be acceptable to count that as one patch?

I never made dungeons synth before and I probably still haven't made anything that sounds like normal dungeon synth, so I'm all for experimentation. The entire spirit of this challenge, in my opinion, is that the framework is there to give us a structure to work within, but the creativity side is completely free, and its all just to challenge yourself and hopefully have fun. I've used electric guitars in some of my previous efforts. I think bass could sound really cool. If you want to work within the patch constraints I would maybe count like a specific amp setting as a patch, i.e. a distorted bass and a clean bass should really be two "patches" for our purposes - that being said I think its kind of an honor system and you can interpret the guidelines as you see fit.

I really love this idea, and I'm gonna give it a shot. It's almost time again! Enter the DungeonOur theme is literally being in a dungeon! Hey, but isn't it that the rules of the challange are set by bartizanier and are identical for all participants?

Hey, but isn't it that the rules of the challange are set by bartizanier and are identical for all participants? My main idea is that we use the same roll, but I think theres a post in the thread where I said that people are free to do their own roll if they like, or you can use the same one as me.

Oh, I see. I can do your parameters, I misread.

I've got 5 tracks down and I gotta say, this particular set of restrictions, plus the dungeon to give me inspiration, has made it (relatively) easy to just sit down and make some atmospheric stuff. It feels like limiting the instruments means I'm not struggling to find a "sound" for a new song, I just have to go with what I've got. If I'm lucky, I'll have it all mastered and posted before the deadline.
I am actually only using 5 patches rather than 6, just because it's what I ended up using for the first couple of songs and I decided to stick it out with them for the rest of the album. A percussion patch from Mateus (from one of his bonus tracks on the Middle Ages reissue), my string sample I've been using in various tracked songs since the early 90s, an oboe, a crunchy pad sample from a jv2080, and a slightly phase-y lead that I think came with Renoise.
I hope this is in the spirit of the challenge, but I'm considering DAW effects to be kind of my "6th patch" (Renoise's built-in EQ/reverb/delay, plus BABY Audio's Super VHS). It's mostly a thin veneer on the top to pull it all together mastering-wise; it would work fine without that, just gives a bit more of a retro vibe and makes them work together as a whole a little better.

Excellent! Glad to hear you're making such great process and sounds like having fun too. Maybe I forgot to mention but feel free to use effects however you want. Sounds like you're totally working within the spirit of the challenge.
I intended to post an update today so I will right now. One week in, and I'm having fun with it as well, though the composition side has felt more strained than I thought it would. I spent the week just making little sketches and not worrying too much about the patches. Now I've started looking back and choosing the ideas I like best, and remixing them using what I think will be my six instrument patches. Kind of working backwards when it comes to the patch selection, and I only have five at the moment as well - keys, a pad/lead, voice, a processed Linn drum kit, a synth bass. The last patch might end up being a pad, strings, or something else.
Looking forward to the next week and doing some composition now with the set patches. Good luck to all!

RangerRick code hbdt-6llm claimed, thanx Also, thumbs up to the participants of the challenge, sometimes "Less is More" and all these constraints maybe like a 64k(or less) demo in the demoscene will push people to explore boundaries.. And the challenge is also cool simply because reading stuff like " generate a dungeon map to use as inspiration " is EXACTLY the stuff I want to listen to.. Much respect to all for keeping it real and alive !! p.s. Or a cave map
