Thought about doing a retropie. I got a SNES Classic, flashed the kernel very easily, and now put more games on it as well as GBA titles. There are a wealth of ROM hacks I am getting into, as well as playing games such as Shadowrun and the uncensored Lufia game. Also nice to be able to play Secret of Mana with the kids, they have updated the color palette in some of these games and they actually look good on large screens.
On the other hand, my wife is obsessed with 7 Days to Die, and has been playing it obsessively. It got such bad reviews, but with some tweaks, it can be a pretty fun, kind of freaky survival game. Having split-screen is pretty nice too.

I like 7 Days To Die on the PC! Sure, it's not perfect, but very, very atmospheric. Been a while since I played it though, so I don't know how much it's changed since then.

I splitscreen with wife, which you can imagine cuts down the graphics, but they add a Turok-like fog to compensate. Really like that Divinity:OS is splitscreen. Feels pretty epic to play a full scale CRPG from the couch with my wife.

At present I am digging back into my Nth play of the original Ultima Underworld. The 2nd game was a huge influence on me as a child, and yet I have never finished the 1st one. Unsurprisingly it's hugely immersive and I'm in awe of its importance to gaming even outside of CRPGs. Perhaps the only thing that doesn't stand up is the real-time combat. Never bothered me as a kid but it doesn't really offer much in the way of tactical decisions apart from when to move forward and back. My taste for turn-based combat has increased with age.

I played UU1 back then and it was a blast.. The only game that somehow seemed more advanced (but in retrospect I;m not sure it actually is) was Stonekeep a little bit later.
UU was more like pure magic. A whole world. The dwarf level 2. The knights level 4. The Lizards with their own language in level 5.. And as you got deeper to level 8 more lava more abyss .. What an eeeeepic game.. My favourite RPG of the era. Never also finished it, at some point near the endgame you had to backtrack the maps on the upper left area and you need an item from an npc on an earlier dungeon level I somehow had already killed :/ And I always left UU2 which had great reviews back then for "later" since only I think Arx Fatalis much later was similar to those.. AFAIK a new game in the same footsteps is about to come out soon.

Most reviews I've read about UU2 have been pretty hot or cold, either liking it the same as or a little less than UU1 or being completely disappointed in it. I've only played UU1 for maybe an hour, but I've always admired what it is. I'd like to actually complete it one day. What's the game that's out soon?

Somehow it doesn't have the Ultima licensing even though a bunch of the same people who worked on UU and the spiritual successors like System Shock 1+2 and Deus Ex, etc, are on the team for this one.

Indeed it's Underworld Ascendant as nahadoth said!! Couldn't come back with the name last night.. There are high hopes for this game based on both RPG Watch and RPG Codex I think..
Yes it was Looking Glass technology that made UUs and then System Shocks(and I think Thief series in the beggining ? don't remember).. Again System Shocks are both too on my "to play" list like old wine, always waiting the right moment for them. On the other hand I AM DAMN GLAD I have already played finished and enjoyed in my life the first Deus Ex (yet the rest too), probably the best Science Fiction game ever imho. Excellent game faaaaaaar ahead of its time, almost as defining for the genre as Neuromancer was for example for cyberpunk.. And also Deus Ex along with the original Myst have my two favourite modern games soundtrack.. Thousand times listened to them..

I've played it to completion at least three times in my life. Of the sequels, I've only played the 2nd game, and it didn't have much of the same charm, although I've heard good things about the series since. System Shock, since it is UU engine more or less, is one that I haven't completed. Made a few attempts but just wasn't in the mood for something with quite such old school mechanics, even though the game's ambition is clear. System Shock 2 will remind you of Deus Ex in the best way, both in the interface and in the steady unfolding of the story. It's a great atmosphere overall, very paranoid but in a different way than in Deus Ex.

I actually started Deus Ex 2 at least two times and both I dropped it in the very first level. Although it seems I follow a pattern on this since I also for example finished Mass Effect 1 which I also consider a modern classic and after 10 minutes of play I dropped Mass Effect 2.. Dunno.. Yes the modern Deus Ex have received very very good reviews! As for System Shock 1 there is going I think to be released soon a modern remake which I will probably play finally

Anyone remember Zork? The text only PC DOS game ![8-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/nerd.png) I also used to read the Zork "choose-your-own-adventure" books as a kid. These maps might be inspirational for DS purposes... ![](http://oldsite.ironrealms.com/sites/default/files/zork-1-map.jpg) ![](http://gue.cgwmuseum.org/galleries/others/zork1_zug_map_3.jpg) ![](http://oldsite.ironrealms.com/sites/default/files/zork-II-map.jpg) How about Gauntlet? I remember a tabletop arcade version and the NES one. ![](https://flyers.arcade-museum.com/flyers_video/atari/11006901.jpg)

emerge, kool Zork maps. I've only played it for about 15 minutes before. I have a bunch of them I got on GOG. I've been hopping between roguelikes lately, and actually just this morning I considered starting another game of Vespers. It's a text adventure/interactive fiction game that takes place in a monastery and there lots of morality options (letting people die, greed, etc). It's a really engaging game. Haven't played all too many pure text adventures, but I played King's Quest a lot when I was little (text-input adventure game). Gauntlet is fun. I usually play the archer or the wizard.

Yes, King's Quest! Wow, I had forgotten playing that, a childhood friend had that one. Lots of subtle humor in the game, iirc. Zork was the first PC game I remember playing as a kid, wasn't very good at it. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Gauntlet was pretty hard to play solo, better if you had a group playing which I think was part of the appeal. Vespers sounds like a cool game, I just might get back into these games at some point.

Exhilarating at times alone, all those ghosts swarming you, haha. Definitely check out Vespers, it won some awards. You can play it online through Parchment. Have you played Tower of Druaga? I got into the PC-Engine version a few months ago, nearly completed it but got distracted to other things. I need to run through it to the end. You essentially traverse mazes and collect things on your way to the top of the tower. Each floor of the tower is prompted with like a riddle hinting at something you have to do to get the secret treasure (which help you in different ways). Some items are pretty vital to continue. Really fun game with a casual feel but still engaging.
