Yeah, I imagine Gauntlet would be much more fun with a full team of people. Exhilarating at times alone, all those ghosts swarming you, haha. Definitely check out Vespers, it won some awards. You can play it online through Parchment. Have you played Tower of Druaga? I got into the PC-Engine version a few months ago, nearly completed it but got distracted to other things. I need to run through it to the end. You essentially traverse mazes and collect things on your way to the top of the tower. Each floor of the tower is prompted with like a riddle hinting at something you have to do to get the secret treasure (which help you in different ways). Some items are pretty vital to continue. Really fun game with a casual feel but still engaging. Tower of Druaga is a new one to me. I will give Vespers a try. Dragon Warrior was an early one I remember, also the anime tv show. DQ/W is my all time favorite game series! Such great music, too.

Wow the Zork Anthology collection did contain some maps but as far as I remember they were B/W! Maybe those were on a different version or Gog? Nice maps either way and great games.. I really recommend to anyone here to try and play Zork 1 which is the classic one. Excellent excellent classic text adventure, maybe playing it with DS soundtrack will multiply the experience but still its a great game and a must play for anyone slightly interested in fantasy topics or adventure games.. From the rest of the other Zorks, Zork 2 and 3 weren't that memorable but I really really loved Zork Zero, it has automap if I remember well and graphics and was also great, even had an Hanoi Tower inside game/puzzle.. Too bad I never completed it..
King's Quest 1 is a classic but dunno if it's very playable today. It's core is still great , simple and working : treasure hunt like original Adventure and most zorks, but with Sierra's graphic system.. If I replay it again, which I would gladly if I hadn't have a huge backlog of games to play I've never touched, I would probably go for one of the "recent" (2000-2005 around) fan remake of 256 colors.. Solid game for the era with exploration and also fantasy inspired with fairy tales n stuff..
I never got into Gauntlet, it's considered a classic but never clicked with me..
p.s. Dragon Warrior, Vespers, etc etc also on my "to play list" , an endless list..

I'm going totally retro and re-playing the original Master Of Orion. Of course on Impossible - I've beat it a few time on that difficulty level, but it truly is frustratingly difficult. Mostly because your chances to have even a running chance on that level are so random you'll basically not be wiped out by overpowered enemies in the start of the game maybe one time out of ten. Proper 90's design. Apart from that, this remains one of my favorite 4X games to date.

Stéphane F., Anchorhead looks really kool. I'll have to play it sometime. I'm eagerly awaiting the PS4 remake of Secret of Mana. Should be here today or tomorrow. I've heard really mixed things, more towards the negative end, but the game looks quite fine to me, mostly just overreactions from overly opinionated purist fans. A lot of people are complaining about the graphics and the new music, but to me the graphics seem like a pretty logical 3d version of the SNES sprites, and I haven't heard the music but they actually give you the option to change between the new music and the original SNES music which is pretty kool. Apparently the on-screen map is the SNES map, thought that was a nice throwback touch. Gameplay is tweaked a bit but it seems like it's for the better, ironing out some intensely grindy components but didn't try to make it too easy. Heard complaints about the English voice acting sounding goofy, but even this you can revert to Japanese audio. Seems to me like it'll be a good new version. Wanting to get the Romancing Saga 2 remake as well, but it'll suck my time up more than I can currently afford.

Returned to Heroes of Might And Magic III once again. The first PC game I ever bought (I was a latercomer to the PC, had an Amiga 500 up until then!) after having fallen in love with HoMM II & III through a friend. IMO HoMM III comes pretty close to being a perfect game.

Played through Vespers on thekeeper 's recommendation. Interesting game, i'd never played interactive fiction before. (besides Zork as a kid) I made it to the 2nd day without dying, but hit a dead end and decided to use the walkthrough.

gauntlet 2 is way better than the first one, I used to play that on NES all the time. just played the first one at an arcade, it's cool but the controls are kind of shitty.
but lately I've been playing hyperrogue which is fucking crazy.

I just started playing Abandoned Places after admiring the game’s music for like weeks. I’m loving this atmosphere

Dark Souls 3 was my first Dark Souls and despite the frustration, there was a genuine sense of enjoyment and accomplishment with each step forward. I eventually beat the main game (minus lightning dragon man whose name escapes me at the moment), but haven't found the courage to start up Dark Souls 2 (I do have the SotFS edition) or Bloodborne yet. I'll get there.
Recently been trying to finish up MGS: Phantom Pain and working on the end of Fallout 4. Also just started Witcher 3. Apparently I don't like short games.

Drop Witcher 3 for Bloodborne right away. I don't know anything about The Witcher games besides their length, admittedly, but Bloodborne is so immersive if you like longer games, not to mention it's perfection of the the wyrd-victorian-esoteric-cosmic-horror aesthetic. Incredibly interesting story. I've nearly broken some things playing it, so buckle up for that. I'm hesitant to give anything a 10/10, but it's pretty close.

hmm...
While I wish I could have the reflexes and patience to play a Dark Souls/etc game, I can't but I respect , admire and appreciate what they are even from other people longplays. Rightfully praised indeed.
BUT,
The Witcher games are for modern era RPGs the hugest franchise with endless praise. Personally I've played and finished the first one, which is probably the weakest and it's a good game and that says a lot. If I *should* rate it I'd give it an honest 87% for its dark bleak depiction of the world and huge great atmosphere and quests (like the detective plot in a chapter). It was a really good game with only minor weaknesses the combat system which is awkward but can be tolerated and the G.o.Thrones slight influence (which I dislike). I haven't got the time to get to Witcher 2 or 3. Both of them though get huge praise and based on a lot of what i've read they are huge leaps compared to Witcher 1.
Summing up, I'd say Witcher 3 is definitely a must play and I hope detoxscission does not drop it or anyone who wants to play a modern serious RPG.

Bloodborne is a bit different in mechanics than Dark Souls. I think Dark Souls games are easier than Bloodborne. It requires precision in a different way, it's faster paced, and I'd say more tense. It's definitely hard and there's a learning curve, but you get accustomed to the nuances especially if you dedicate yourself to only a few different weapons. Definitely don't drop Witcher 3 altogether, ha! I guess I was saying to play Bloodborne first since it'll probably be a year before getting around to it if Witcher 3 comes first. I have the first two Witcher games on GOG but I haven't played them yet. Devil Daggers was just released on GOG so I'm excited to finally try that out. Always too much in the backlog.
