I've been somewhat obsessed with this short track recently: "Ruined Castles" by the Roland Kirk Quartet (1990) youtu.be/8vxXrucoEkoI highly doubt that jazz legend Roland Kirk fits directly anywhere in the canon of dungeon synth's origin story, but I'm fascinated by the "convergent evolution" of this track, with a name, theme, melody, and harmonic minor(ish) keying that all fit within the realm of pretty traditional dungeon synth. Takes me back to the question of "What is the actual deep root of this music we make and enjoy?" Black metal and friends certainly helped shaped the presentation and textures of DS, but the "brain worm" of the topic is older and deeper...

I forgot about the Numan versions. He's so great. Reminds me that this track by Japan is very proto dungeon synth: www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4o3IFG89oMPS That Roland Kirk track is uncanny...convergent evolution indeed. He was such a pioneer in so many ways.

Whoa, this track (Japan - Width of a Room) is a great find! Very much reminds me of the 'dark ambient' tracks on those Bowie berlin albums I'm adding it to my 'DS Influence' playlist, which is public here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhFi0as3m1aZA9eBuOtXtAOyBhKmdpwIOBeen trying to collect a lot of 'not-DS' that has the vibe. Sadly, loads of the music gets pulled off of youtube these days, so its become pretty heavy in old videogame music, which I guess has fewer copyright issues with YT? Idk, I suppose that's not necessarily terrible.

Gandahar, also known as Light Years (what I know it as), was a 1988 animated movie that only made like $350,000. I ran across it at a local Blockbusters and rented it. Pretty unusual but imaginative visuals. The below appears to be the Portugese (sp) version. I assume the soundtrack was changed a bit on the U. S. version because I know there was quite a bit of space synth when I rented it but there's barely any below that I could find as I skimmed through it. Anyway, dungeon synth-like stuff appears at 7:40, 14:05, 47:24 (at 47:50 it really picks up, rather than being in the background) and 57:17 and at 1:08:52 it's a bit of a combination of space/dungeon synth. Just note that, even though animated, there is nudity in case you check it out where you're in the capacity where you could get in trouble.

This is some kosmische stuff, reminds me of Jim Kirkwood a bit. I really like the textures of the song at 26:00. The channel where this comes from, Sounds of the Dawn, has so much great old obscure new age music, a lot of which sounds pretty close to DS.

It's crazy how many treasures are out there hidden away from our attention. Thank you for your watchful eye and for sharing!

The Nightcrawlers - Poltergeists (1982)
This band was primarily a space synth ambient band, inspired by Tangerine Dream and the Berlin school. They were active in Philadelphia during the 80s-90's and released 41 albums, mostly cassettes and 3 studio LPs.
Thematically, this album has a DS feel, and the music does too in parts. Check out after 9:00, and the second track, Dance Of The Elves.
