Does anyone else enjoy progressive rock? I mean 1970s stuff, rather than Porcupine Tree or whatever (not that I dislike that music, it's just different). I'm talking about the grandiosity, the bombasticism, the jazz on steroids drumming, the often suprisingly funky bass, the esotric sounding organ riffing and, of course the primitive synth deliciousness...
This is one of my favourites: Alphataurus (1973) from Italy:

here in Italy we have a long time progressive rock tradition... but I think many Italian "proggers" from the 60s and the 70s are largely overrated. I mean, most of them seem to me like poor clones of King Crimson or Jethro Tull... anyway, some of them were really good. Think about Osanna, their album "L'uomo" (with some English lyrics too) or "Ys" from Il Balletto Di Bronzo... great pieces of Italian rock.
Another thing I don't like at all: Italian language does not fit rock music, as good as it may be. I found both singers an lyrics quite ridiculous... I don't know why, but it does not match my ear. And even worse is when they sing in English, what a horrible pronounciation!!

I love early Dream Theater and Symphony-X , both from the 90s, but I think they're not strictly prog....they're much on the metal side. This is a 90s Italian prog cult record from Florence: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaK83iRGWl0 a friend of mine played bass guitar on this.

I wanted to write that "I seriously think 70's prog rock is my favourite stlye of music" haha, well, edited. Actually i'm not much into later prog, but i do love early Symphony X!

I think of Hawkwind more as space rock or psychedelic. They had a punk energy that set them apart from the prog scene imo.
I have long enjoyed music by Van der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and some of the peripherals like Soft Machine and the like. There's definitely a lot of not-great prog out there though.

For me, Magma were the height of prog, outside of King Crimson and some others.

Il Balletto's "Ys" is a top tier classic for sure, along with Muzeo Rosenbach's "Zarathustra"

Yes by all means a killer band, at least in this period - Warrior or Hall of the Mountain Grill are my two faves of their studio albums.

Alright let me try again! (While guessing "In The Court of the Crimson King" is too obvious haha)
I've been listening to this album quite a lot lately:
Edit: How could i forget all-mighty GRYPHON? Defenitly my favourite in the genre!

Try This: Interesting VDGG choice! I prefer this one and Still Life to the "classic pre-order break up ones". Fuck, want to listen to VDGG now...

I even think the last few releases since the reunion have been more-than-passable - especially Trisector and Do Not Disturb. But I'm one of those rare birds who likes 95% of Peter Hammill 's solo catalog so I know I'm probably more patient with them than the average prog fan.
