While finishing some details for a couple of songs, I realised how different they sounded not only depending on which device I used to play them (earphones, headphones, speakers), but also based on the environment/situation I was (alone or with people, during daytime or nightime, relaxed or doing something else).
I would like to know more about other listeners:
How do you usually listen to Dungeon Synth? I normally do it during night, while working-reading-doing whatever stuff on the PC. I like to use headphones for this (I share a flat with two not-DS-listeners), but sometimes I let myself play some songs on a speaker. Sometimes I also listen to it while I'm at the office, but I have to use earphones (no headphones allowed) and the environment keeps me away from the "necessary mood" to truly enjoy it.
How do you prefer to listen to Dungeon Synth? When I enjoy it the most is when I'm alone during night. Listening to it in the countryside is a great experience, but is not easy for me get out of the city, so an intimate space with low lighting feels fitting as well. Sometimes I also like to can grab a book of short stories (preferably terror, of course) for the listening, or even play some nostalgic adventure videogame.

Me too listen at work... Not the perfect place for tasting all its wonderful shades and atmospheres, but DS can be a good background music as well.
The best way, for me, is listening while doing NOTHING. I enjoy reflecting, thinking and traveling with my mind along DS notes. That's all. I would never listen to ambient music in my car, you know what I mean.

I'll listen to it whenever I'm "in the mood" generally it's when I want to relax or study, usually not when I want to get pumped up. Other times I want to challenge myself and then I can listen to it. I think it's great music to study to, as well as share with people.

Yeah I agree that itβs best enjoyed alone while playing a game or reading. With tapes I listen pretty actively but if itβs just like the DS I have on my phone Iβll cue up a bunch and do other stuff

Some DS really pumps me up I agree, especially the more black metal influenced ones. Elffor or Foetus's Pigdom Come segments can get me really pumped.

my friends, this is the power of Music! I live my DS and black metal listening in a full meditative/contemplative way.... if I want something that pumps me up, well I'd surely go for Manowar, Judas Priest, Accept, Iron Maiden and all the 80s HM stuff. Singing the choruses of "Balls to the Wall", Loudness' "Crazy Nights", Railway's "Heavy And Loud" for me is like watching fitness motivational videos

Hell yeah I was actually thinking of Elffor exactly I guess this brings us to the important point that DS has a lot of different moods it can conjure, and that affects the setting in which I like to listen to it. Stuff like this I definitely like to listen to while I'm out walking around or being a bit more active

Nice thread. Now, since I don't have the time to listen to all the DS albums the way I would like to, I need to compromise. I try to listen to it every time I can: while going to work (by car), sometimes when I have lunch, while cooking and even while shaving (really!). But that's just for discovering new artists and new works, not for enjoying them. In my opinion, the best way by far to listen to DS (or to any other contemplative music) is to just sit there, turn the amp on, close my eyes and become one with the music. Of course, I can do that maybe once a week, if I'm lucky. But I appreciate DS a lot also while working on my computer in the evening or while reading a book, and fortunately I can do that almost daily

I listen to DS almost exclusively outdoors, walking from place to place. That said, "outdoors" is mostly always in urban environments, Nature being quite far. Somehow it makes a totally different kind of world open up for me, one that helps me feel more at home.
In the car, i find I don't listen much to DS, there I prefer neofolk, Berlin school, weird psych/prog, post-minimalism, basically almost anything else. Sadly, I find it difficult to work or read and listen to music as well, and when doing really mundane things i prefer to listen to podcasts.

I listen to DS in almost exactly the same manner as Ropp. Late at night, alone, with headphones, in the dark, on the computer. I prefer to be slightly inebriated, and I usually either read RPG supplements or else old pulp fiction - Dunsany, Howard, Lovecraft, and C.A. Smith being the favorites.

I listen to it alone. Usually at night with headphones. Or in my car driving around doing whatever.

Mostly on my commute to work (on foot, through lovely countryside - pretty sweet!). I find that some albums really "stick" in my head to a specific place, for instance I listened to this: pagodamast.bandcamp.com/album/forest-of-sempiternal-night whilst trudging through a snowy field at night, surrounded by snowmen (it was... weird). Whilst walking is probably how I prefer to listen as well, it is my own private time between work and family - invaluable! BTW Ropp I know what you mean about different devices, I only listened to my tracks through headphones on my PC & phone when I was mixing them (I'd do a different mix each night then listen the next day) next time I'll put it through my old stereo system as well...

Either working in the garden or doing the dishes seem to be the best time for me to listen to dungeon synth, outside of reading and studying.

I do not listen to dungeon synth if it i am not in a situation where i can enjoy all it's (just like stormcrow said) "wonderful shades and atmospheres", and i totaly agree with him that the best way to listen to DS, is just do nothing while listening to DS. This is one of the reasons i like tapes - it makes it more ceremonial, and sometimes some candles are lit in the process. If i have digital copy of a release, i'll useally burn them into a CD and still listen through the tape. I do listen in PC sometimes, when i surf the bandcamp and other medias to listen to DS, but computer also takes me away from these shades and atmospheres sometimes, because it is full of distractions. But i also use DS music while i draw or craft, or when i'm writing something (d&d sessions, characters, poems, really anything). I enjoy it, though in this case DS serves me more of an inspireing tool, which is a totally amazing experience just as well.
