Good discussion. I don't have much to add but I agree there have been many times I've seen something listed as "old school dungeon synth" that didn't seem so to me, most often that soundtracky Radio Rivendell-sounding stuff. What I think I dislike about that more though is if the release date isn't listed somewhere near that tag noobs might mistake it for stuff that's legitimately old-school, as in from the 90's. So in that way I prefer "true ds," "traditional ds," and "dark dungeon music" for what they're trying to convey, even though I think it's inaccurate in the case of the soundtracky stuff.

Radio Rivendell. Perfect. Did you coin that term andrewwerdna?

Before 2011 DS was so impossible to find, I listened Radio Rivendell for ages hoping by a slim chance I'd discover some DS I hadn't heard. I don't think I ever did, but always since then I mentally refer to the soundtracky fantasy synth stuff as "Radio Rivendell music."

Fair post on criticism maxims. They should just review the new Thangorodrim album already. Interested in hearing an alternative take.

I'm starting a discography listen-though right now. Dagor Bragalloch is a great album, I don't know why this was removed from BC.

That Thango review summed up all of my composition based gripes with the album, even liked the same bits I liked (even mentioned the same parts of Dagor that I had mentioned). I'm glad they specified the exhaustion of the key everything is in. I felt you could skip around to random parts of the album for 10 seconds at a time and it'd be believable that each of those parts were part of the same song. There were some kool lines in Ancalagon and Vingilótë, but otherwise it all felt like easy variations on a theme. I'm curious to see what people's top DS releases of the year are like and how often this will be number one.
edit: I should say the review focuses on composition more than anything else (this is the prominent focus in most of these reviews). I think atmosphere and general feel from the album, 'spirit', if you will, could be commented on more often for these reviews. Everything is apt and well said here, but I think there's more than composition to talk about for Gil-Estel.
