I think DS is tricky to rate because your enjoyment can be so independent of “objective measures of quality” in terms of technicality and things like that. I’m sure I phrased that poorly but anyway I think DS just doesn’t necessarily lend itself well to numeric rating Sounds like you're hitting on that "personal music" aspect that keeps showing up in all sorts of dungeon discussions. It may be hard to word, but I know exactly what you're talking about. Maybe there's some way to rate DS with respect to different archetypical listener tastes... One could always quantify their enjoyment I guess, but at different times I could give the same album different scores. I kind of feel like maybe a number score plus a couple tags (#dark, #light, #hi-fi, #lo-fi, etc.) might be helpful or something I dunno. Ultimately it’s probably most informative in its current format.

I read that review this morning and you totally deserve all the praise you got. It's a really beautiful album, rich in texture and dynamic as it gets. You brought all sorts of new sounds and instruments to the table and it was a really new, refreshing listen. Thank you and great job!

yeah super well deserved IMO. I'm glad I finally got my shit together and ordered the tape from Canrith before they sold out.

That's great man! Killer release, I'm listening to it right now. The track "Ruins" is amazing, reminds me of Solanum's "An Illusion of Time". This whole album has a lot of diversity and energy that you should be very proud of.

Hey! Infinite thanks for you kind words! I didn't know about the artist you're talking about, just listening now on YT and I like his work a lot, seems indeed that he has (had?) the same ambient/DS vision that I have... Halfway between Mortiis' melancholy and heroic-fantasy soundtracks. Anyway, your appreciation makes me really proud of my work, since i believe touching listeners' emotions is the ultimate and REAL target of any kind of art.

A comprehensive review almost every day for over two months, wow. I keep wondering how long this person can keep it up and yet they show no sign of slowing. I'm continually impressed.
Also I like that this person is starting to wade into the Russian stuff. I think those reviews are particularly useful because we get very little exposure from that side of the scene and we must be missing out on many great releases. I used to read the VK page with google translate awhile back, which was quite interesting. They had a full-fledged social media scene long before we did.

That's the point! I had a webzine back in the early days of internet metal journalism, and I know what a commitment it may be. In a few years, it became almost a full time job, but with no earning at all (apart from free promo CDS and free pass at some live show). So... Does it really worth the dedication? I wish this reviewer all the best, he shows a rare competence. It would be great to see his site getting bigger and bigger.

Never occurred to me before now to try and read VK with translate. Took me a really long time to figure out how the bot was transliterating "Dungeon" to Denjen or Dzhenzhen

Looks like Hearthedungeons is still going strong despite a few quiet moments. I checked out the Ruinous Powers - Undiscover album that was recently given a positive review and I quite like it. Lots of unique sounds and melodies. Also I just discovered this review blog, might be worth keeping an eye on: esotericambience.com/

Wow, this person has covered a lot of stuff. I see the DS coverage is a little more recent but there's definitely some interesting stuff to pick over.

Wow, this person has covered a lot of stuff. I see the DS coverage is a little more recent but there's definitely some interesting stuff to pick over. Clicked the first review and was instantly greeted with such a hot take:
"I’ll say it, this is basically Mortiis but better. Well really, most artists who copied Mortiis were better than him, but that’s another topic entirely." - Thangorodrim "Taur-nu-Fuin" review
Damn. "Most artists" who copied Mortiis were better at the epic sound? I don't agree, but I appreciate such a genuine alternative take. Someone invite this person to the board, haha.

Ah I forgot about this blog but I remember that I stumbled on it in November or something. It's curated by RYM user ElectricLizard and I'm not sure if this person makes DS but I see them talking about it a lot. thekeeper he might even live near you, might be worth dropping him some sorta message. rateyourmusic.com/~ElectricLizardEDIT: He has a list on rym that refers to nbbmn 2017 so I'm assuming he's also a /mu/tant so I've probably encountered him there too EDIT: An archival search confirms that yes he does post in that hellhole periodically haha
