Dark ambient definitely emerged out of industrial. The only reason people talk about dark ambient in relation to DS is because a lot of DS was mistakenly called dark ambient prior to the coining of the term “Dungeon synth”. I think “medieval dark ambient” was how some people thought of it but if you look at it most DS is pretty different from conventional dark ambient. Some DS incorporates elements of DA but I hardly think of DA as being like a “component” of DS or something that defines DS in any way I agree. I think there are far more non-DA-influenced DS artists than DA-influenced DS. Some DA-influenced artists are much more noticeable: Erdstall, Abyssu, Deorc Weg, Warden, etc.
If it had to be a fusion: Black metal + Berlin school + score music + neofolk + drone + baroque + medieval folk + vgm + dark ambient.
