Let's not forget this classic, we can't call this a Dungeon Synth forum without discussing THE DUNGEONMASTER. I can't decide if it's amazing or absolutely terrible. W.A.S.P. makes a special appearance in this movie as well. Horror movie nerd fact: If you watch the original Troll (not the terrible sequel everyone talks about) you can see a promo poster for this movie hanging up in one of the kids' rooms. The first Troll is actually a decent fantasy/horror movie. And the dad in the movie is named Harry Potter, so there's that. JK Rowling denies ripping it off, but I'm suspicious. ICE MONSTERS OF DOOM!!! fuck this looks awesome

Or if you want the ultra classic fantasy movies, look for Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Neverending Stories and Legend. Most of those films have a 'throw glitters on everything aesthetic' which I totally agree on. Dark Crystal and Neverending Stories are classics. Don't miss "Return to Oz" with a young Faruza Balk. It's quite over the top, low production, and actually kinda dull for the most part, but there's that nice strangeness or uncanniness to it that I connect with. Bakshi's Lord of the Rings is another good one, especially if you're into animation. Other ones fit for this board (and adult): Dune, The Name of the Rose, Ladyhawke, Cruising, Heart of Glass.

Return to Oz was one of those movies that always seemed to be on when I was a kid. The Wheelers used to scare the shit out of me though.

Return to Oz was legitimately scary to me as a kid, too. There was just an 'off' feeling to the whole movie. I haven't seen it since I was little, I should revisit it and see how I feel now.

I rewatched Return to Oz last night (I returned to Return to Oz...), and it definitely needs revisiting if you haven't seen it since you were a kid. It holds up really well and it's actually a fantastic movie. Not nearly as creepy as I remember it, but the Wheelers and Mombi's hall of heads are all pretty strange. The very first scene with the Wheelers is actually kind of scary, but they're mostly just strange after that (once you realize that they have masks on the top of their heads). Great pacing, Dorothy's character in this is extremely resilient ("it can't be helped now"), the supporting characters are interesting, and the everything looks amazing. Some really good puppetry and costumes. It's a shame it did so poorly at the time, but I can understand how this would scare kids.

I rewatched it recently, and it's still a nice fantasy movie in the typical 80s style. Some bones-chilling scenes, too!

Nobody has mentioned Pan's Labyrinth, and seeing as though I just watched it the other day, I am pretty stoked on it. I think it's an absolutely intoxicating film experience, I'd even go so far as to put it in my top ten of all time. The CGI is a bit dated and kind of ugly, but the practical effects outshine! The twin-worlds of Spanish Civil War era Spain and the fantasy kingdom to which the young protagonist is the potential heir make for an interesting concept that could be implemented well in dungeon synth narratives...
I think a more historical, existential approach rather than a fantasy, medieval one to dungeon synth could prove to be super cool. I know it's been done (right?).
My friend from the Infinite Forest recently released something called Verdun, and he was hesitant to use "Verdun" as a name, it being the site of the largest battle in the first World War. But I encouraged it! I think the mixing of fantasy and history (no matter the era) is a beautiful marriage.

Watched "Mazes and Monsters" not long ago, an anti-d&d propaganda from the early 80's, because of all the panic that went in the media about the game. I really liked it. It seems that as if those "anti-d&d" crew was quite passionate about the atmosphere of the game, and made a main character that i think all DS fans can really identify with. In short and in less spoilers possible, it is about a person with a traumatic past who come back to play Dungeons and Dragons (in film called "Mazes and Monsters"), after a long time, which cause his line between his fantasy-themed imagination and reality to blur - from there, it gets worse. Now i post it here in KVLT MOVIES because it is very DS atmosphere, not all of it, and this is the point. Some parts are fantasy, some parts are complete realism. I am not schizophernic or anything and will never get to where the main character got. The imagination and reality are different things which are not blured togather to me (as far as i know at least haha). I am obsessed with fantasy though, since birth, and in some other forms, i do feel like this obsession can clash with reality in certin times and places, sometimes even daily. I guess my bottom line is that it is nice to have a film about the relation between fantasy and reality instead of just beeing pure fantasy, like i used to love, and i think that this topic naturaly speak to DS fans. Now i can't and don't think it's important to decide if it's good or bad, but there are some cringey stuff here and there, but i found them easy to ignore.

Maybe the moral of the story is too much about christianity for me, but it's one of Del Toro's best works anyway.

Any thoughts on Hagazussa?
Reading some reviews, there are comparisons to The Witch and David Lynch, which is high praise to me.
